Eve has a reputation as being a harsher kind of MMO where whining is rightfully ridiculed and even CCP members are known to tell players to “HTFU.” However sometimes this kind of attitude is used to give people an excuse to be unnecessarily obnoxious. This manifests itself mostly in people with little going on in their lives and use “being really serious about Eve” as a way to compensate. This kind of thing really hampers the community from expanding particularly among newer players who run into this kind of issue, and promptly exit the game. This has nothing to do with people being unable to cope with the hard aspects of the game, but rather annoying people who one would just rather not be around. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying the game at a more leisure pace. Not everyone has to be that “dangerous pirate” in Eve because let’s face it; most people simply are not like that.
United Phoenix Federation is an alliance that respects people’s individual life commitments and understands that those come first. At the same time, they still have extensive goals and a motivated leader keen on reaching them. Combining the openness of a new player friendly alliance and highly motivated leadership has been a successful combination for a number of alliances. Brave Newbies and Wingspan were both entities that were once considered as being too casual for Eve yet in their time accomplished many of their goals and left a mark in the game. Most people only realize the potential and success in retrospect. For those willing to preempt such ascents, they’re likely to create their fortunes and legacies within such an alliance.
Many initially wrote off groups such as Brave Collective and Wingspan only to be surprised by their growth and impact on the game. To the chagrin of some critics, having a very relaxed attitude toward the game can be liberating and even conducive toward one’s success. United Phoenix Federation has similar goals of growing under a similar relaxed and friendly pretense. Even so they wish to reach high above what one may typically expect of a newer alliance. Along with general goals like expanding their industrial capabilities, they seek specific goals such as establishing themselves out in nullsec, having branches in wormhole space and even building a Palatine Keepstar.
The combination of relaxed attitude, high goals and that fresh new perspective feel is likely to bring back the nostalgia even to the most bitter of veterans. Lacking the political baggage and drama of older alliances, a place within United Phoenix Federation allows newer players to forge their own identity as well as giving vets a chance to reinvent their Eve experience. One of CCP’s most difficult jobs is ensuring that newer player retention is maximized. United Phoenix Federation is the kind of industrial alliance that seems to be on a course to do just that. Those willing to open their sails can ride the winds forward and leave their mark in this universe with them.
