Submission: What I have learned playing eve online

May 16, 2016

Hello my name is Arreon Slickshot, member of Unholy Knights of Cthulhu, T.E.S.T. supporter and Eve Fanatic. Over the past year playing Eve online I have learned things that this game is unlike any other I have played. I wanted to take some time to look back on my time in game and share what I have learned. This is my opinion and some of you may disagree but this is what I believe, and would like you, fellow eve online players and readers to both criticize me and to give me some talking points for other articles.

First thing I learned when I started playing Eve online is to find a corporation of pilots who are likeable, well equipped to teach you and replace your eventual ship destruction. This may be the most important lesson learned because when I was starting out in eve I just went into corporation finder, just checked the boxes for what I wanted in my perfect corp. This may be good once you have your idea on what you want to do in Eve, but it’s is probably not the way to find a corp that best matches you. So to start I would go to Pandemic Horde, TEST or E-Uni to learn and to get an idea on how expansive this game really is.

Second and probably most important thing is to never undock something you can’t afford to lose. Many veterans repeat this mantra over and over. It doesn’t matter if you are in a cruiser and they are in a rookie ship once you undock you are checking the box saying “Yes I agree to PVP”. CONCORD won’t help you they will just avenge your death. It can be particularly devastating after you spend hours scrounging enough money together to get a shiny new corax and lose it on the undock because you get ganked or die somewhere out in low or nullsec. How are you going to replace the lost ship? You could insure it in order to gain some or all of the value back but it can get costly if you move place to place and need to repackage your ships to move them.

Third, have variations in your ISK making strategies, mix it up every once and awhile! Exploration is a good idea as it isn’t that skill intensive compared to something like ratting sites or doing incursions. I started out doing mining and exploring eve online’s galaxy. Pretty much just a galactic tourist I wandered and wandered taking with me all I could carry in my trusty caracal. Just find what you enjoy when making ISK and it won’t feel like too much of a grind. Try something new and stick with it who knows it could be the best way to make ISK down the line. One last tip I have for making money, see if any mission runners would mind you tagging along to salvage their wrecks. The salvage you can get can add up quick and can be quite profitable.

Fourth, if you want to learn to pvp go small scale in frigates and destroyers and go to faction warfare space. Faction warfare space is space that one of the four factions of eve online are contesting to claim as their own. What you can do is get into a frigate and go throughout this space and look for small complexes or “Plexes” as some people call them and sit in them waiting for fights. This can also be a very good way to make money by siding with a particular faction to gain loyalty points which you can convert into unique faction ships, modules, and Ammo to either sell or to use for yourself.

Last and probably most importantly don’t trust anybody in Jita and Amarr, I don’t care if they are doing a fireside sale or double your ISK, they prey on new players to make their money. The scummiest of money making methods in my opinion. Don’t trust people in Eve until they earn your trust. Now this doesn’t mean don’t trust anybody, many people you meet are going to be nice and cool people. But in Eve but a select few people will try to scam you out of all of your hard earned ISK.

Well that was 5 things  Learned over the first year of playing Eve and even this just skims the surface. While this is just an opinion of mine I would like you to comment or show your point of view so I can see the other opinions and learn more about Eve and it’s awesome community.
