What’s in a name? – Discussing the application of the EULA

September 27, 2014

What is your character name for? It the the primary means by which you are identified by your corpmates and indeed your enemies. It is the persona you create for yourself, but what if that is suddenly taken away from you? How should the EULA apply to player names? I have spoken to the player formerly known as Anal Canal to find out his experiences on recently losing his identity. For those who are not familiar with him, Anal Canal is a long standing member of CODE. and indeed the new order itself. He now goes by the name Caldari Citizen 14330909

The Killick > I was wondered if you had a few moments to speak about your imposed name change, and tell all the people out there perhaps unfamiliar with your story what happened from your perspective.

Anal Canal > I’ve got time, and I’ll do my best haha.

The Killick > A couple of years ago I had one of my alts names stripped away and given a name similar to yours, I was offered the chance to change it, have you been offered the same opportunity?

Anal Canal > Yes & no. I received a boilerplate form letter stating that my name was changed for ‘reasons’ with the generic statement that my name can be changed. However there was no explanation of how to exactly do this.I eventually figured out that I needed to open a ticket, but the first one I did was under the wrong topic, and was closed.

The Killick > How long did you go by the name Anal Canal?

Anal Canal > I had my previous name for just over 7 years when it was changed. CCP also has not provided a response to my question about naming parameters to clear up their naming policies… specifically section 2a & 2b on Eve’s User Policy

The Killick > In my experience much of th EULA is very fuzzily worded to allow the GM’s a great deal of latitude in dealing with things, that said I would continue with attempting to ticket CCP for a change.
Do you think the reluctance to offer you an alternative is in part motivated by the upset CODE. created in the opening stages of ATXII?

Anal Canal> I do feel that with recent events that have happened, I do feel targeted. A quick search of the word ‘anal’ of players will provide a vast amount of characters that have that in their name, mine was a simple medical term that I felt was amusing.

The Killick > Indeed, do you feel your visibility with ATXII and the New Order in general may have made you a target. The New Order is a very divisive subject with players.

Anal Canal > Between the actions that CODE. has done, with the recent actions of CCP post ATXII it would appear so. However, correlation does not imply causation. Have you considered what you will name yourself if you get the chance?

Anal Canal > I have a few ideas running through my head. I might run a contest regarding naming rights. But for right now I am holding onto the name as a badge of honor for recently fallen corp mates. Once I get clarification regarding the parameters that I can use to rename myself I will have a better understanding of what options for my name I can use.

The Killick > And finally what does the near future hold for you as a person, a player and a member ofthe new order?

Anal Canal > Regarding the near future of myself in game, I will keep doing what I have been doing. Market PVP, corp logistics and enforcing The Code. As a person, recent event I can say have left a bitter taste in my mouth. The vagueness and lack of followup. While I never expected a ‘why’ to come around from it, just a simple response stating what I am allowed to do (regarding the name) and other pilots can do regarding their accounts, and as for CODE. I do feel that we will continue to keep winning, and protecting High-Sec as always.

The Killick > I will, okay before I go any final thoughts or messages to share?

Anal Canal > Nothing other than CODE. plans to continue what we do in this game even while under the microscope.

I would like to thank Anal Canal for his time in speaking with us.

So what are your opinions on the matter, is the EULA too fuzzy and unclear or are cases of apparent whimsical rule enforcement such as this one entirely within CCP’s rights? How would you clarify the EULA or do you believe it’s current vagueness allows the GM’s more discretion? Please share your thoughts below.
