The passing of a New Eden Community member has a massive rippling effect on pilots. For capsuleers in EVE Online a death means returning to a new clone. Ships looking to jump long distance without the use of a gate require a Cynosural Beacon (Cyno) to lock onto before voyaging between stars. In a very real sense Cyno’s are candles in space, and Cyno vigils have become the communities way of remembering its members and the hope that their spirit will come back to a new clone.

Cyno Vigil Tribute

u/Cornak of Test Alliance Please Ignore posted the following on reddit as an invite for all to join in on TEST’s Cyno Vigil for Swet Mags.

Good morning friends,

As you may have heard, our good buddy Swet Mags, or Cody, was taken from us last night. He was a pillar of our community, and was the only thing that kept a lot of us going even when things seemed like they weren’t going to work. Swet never stopped looking to do better and achieve more. He was the core of our fc team, the bossman of our mentors, and the inspiration for everything we did. Without Swet Mags, I can safely say Dreddit would not be anywhere near where it is today. He was a force that would not stop going, no matter the odds. The Battle of 46DP was one of the best examples of this, where despite having a full hostile fleet, then caps, then supers, Swet kept pushing through, and managed to win despite the odds. His joy after that was one of the greatest feelings I’ve known, and he showed us all what it really means to play EVE. He was an icon, and possibly the best known member of Dreddit. Everyone, from the newest newbro to the bitterest bittervet knew Swet, and everything he did. We will never forget him, nor should we.

Without Swet, our lives will all be missing something we cannot get back. But one thing that’s important to learn from Swet is to never stop looking up. Always keep going, even if things look dark, or you feel like you’re up against a ceiling. Swet didn’t just break through those ceilings, he didn’t even acknowledge that ceilings can exist. There was nothing that was too high for Swet to strive for, and he, often unexpectedly, would always manage to hit that target. He will be missed.

Ozzeh has set up a memorial auth group for Swet, I highly suggest you join it: ctrl-f Swet

Baldur has also compiled an album of some great pictures of Swet from EVE Vegas, let him know if you have any that are missing:

Starting now, we’ll be conducting a cyno vigil in D-P. I hope that all of you will join me in this. There will also be a memorial roam later. Don’t hesitate to reach out, either within our community, or externally, if you need help getting through this. If you’d like to send a personal note to the family, let me know. On a personal note, I recommend having a good cry when you can. Don’t keep your feelings bottled up.

:pingsocks: in #general for Swet

“Cynos really were the perfect choicethey symbolized our wish: that VR would bridge home and come back to us. A wish so strong it dwarfed the rest of the galaxy.” – A Goonswarm member during the Cyno vigil for Vile Rat

I dont know Mags, I dont know much about this situation, but the beauty of this community doing this kind of thing for its fellow players brings tears to my eyes. God bless this game, and all its players. o7 Fly safe, everyone.

Where kind words and cheer can fail, the community utilizes poems and graphical art to express their lose and memorize the fallen.

RIP Swet Mag

Eyes forward, capsuleer, the cyno is not yet lit.

Consider your modules, your rigs and ammo before you undock. For the cyno

is not yet lit.

Break free of the station and witness the universe before you. For the cyno is not yet lit.

Set your ship to fly through the vastness while you wait. For the cyno is not yet lit.

Pay attention, capsuleer, for those who have gone before you call for you to join them.

The cyno is now lit.

Cyno Lit Peom

Closing Thoughts

The loss of a family member, a friend, a leader, a member of the community can be difficult anytime of the year, but as we enter into the holiday season, it can have an even larger impact. Please, don’t forget about services like Spam 4 Heals and Broadcast for Reps. If you are interesting in more ways the community honors its fallen members check out this article.
