Blog: Chronicles of an Eve NoOb – 5 Things Not To Do While Mining

June 16, 2016

Hello folks. Here I am once again to cry about how I’m a noob and how finding my place in Eve is oh so hard.

Give me a minute…

Ok, who wiped their ass on the tissues? There’s always that one guy.

While I clean this off my face here are 5 things not to do while mining. These are fully my opinion, if you don’t like it, find me in game. My in-game name is… Yeah right, like I would tell you so you could pop my brand new venture.

ON WITH THE LIST!

 1 – Go AFK.

So I’m sitting and PVEing a particularly large veldspar asteroid watching my ore hold fill up before zooming away to store my 2 million isk worth of pet rocks. I had just gotten back to my favorite mob, mining drone 1’s tearing its face off while I zapped it from a healthy 10km away, when the undeniable urge to urinate hit me full force. Now, I know I’ve been told to never afk mine but I thought:

“It’s just a quick tinkle”

Little did I know that when I returned I would be sitting in a pod, once again the victim of the dastardly Serpentis.

 2 – Keep DScan Closed.

Yeah I know, I was warned, but I was in high sec and no one kills miners in high sec. Even if they did CONCORD or the police force would rush to my aid.

Yeah, that ain’t how this plays out. I’m not sure why the PVPer felt the need to bring out all 5 of his drones when his VNI landed but he sure made quick work of me and then zoomed off just as his buddy warped in to loot my destroyed Venture. I hope those bastards choke on the rocks!

3 – Not having local in a separate window where it can be seen at all times.

It is quickly becoming clear to me that when there is someone in local who is orange, flashing red, or flying one of those cheap ships that can quickly destroy a Venture that something bad could happen. What I have also found is that being in a low populated system helps to know who is a threat. Coupled with not doing #2 a miner can stay relatively safe. That is, unless it’s one of those bastard ships that show up because I haven’t been watching closely and sneak up on me, sending my pod, if they are nice, back home with one less Venture.

4 – Mining in low sec where there is obviously a Corp base and they don’t know you.

I found an awesome spot and when I first entered the lowsec system it was completely empty. So I took off for the blue ice. I was so happy to find an empty system and blue ice I forgot all about #2 and #3. What I missed on scan was an entire fleet returning home from a roam. What they didn’t miss was some neut mining their ice. Needless to say I didn’t get far, and returned only once to find I had missed that there was an Astrohaus in the system. I had blue ice vision and couldn’t concentrate on anything other than that beautiful ice.

 5 – Pick a fight with someone who isn’t a miner or who isn’t only a miner.

So I lied a little. I did return to the blue ice system, with my other account, who proudly flies a Drake. I had read online about how great the Drake would be and I had geared it up for level 4 mission running. Came to find out a mission fit Drake is no match for a Daredevil and a Tengu. Also came to find out they followed my pod and waited for me to exit from the undock, which I did, completely oblivious to the perils of not paying attention. Final score: 1 Drake & 1 Venture – Nothing.

Mining is a proud carebear activity to make isk in a predictable way. It is also boring. If you do the five things you just read it will quickly become not boring, until you are riding back in a pod or waiting for your clone to load then it becomes boring and anger inducing.
