Most kills in EVE are fairly straight forward affairs. Fleet A jumps into Fleet B and mayhem ensues. Victory falls most often to the side with better ships or larger numbers. To be sure, pilot skill and pilot error play their part as well but it is only rarely that true genius has its chance to shine. These special moments are celebrated by capsuleers everywhere. Videos such as those by Rooks and Kings remain popular even long after the events they document.

I want to salute one such bit of cleverness I encountered a short while ago. While it may not rise the benchmark set by the esteemed Rooks and Kings, it was certainly the high point of that particular nights game play.

I salute you, Misticue of Galactic Dragons for a rather enjoyable trap. Well played Sir, well played.

The evening had been a slow one. For the most part my friends and I were hanging about on comms, talking about kills and losses and generally wasting time. We decided to roam and so scouts were out scanning down area wormholes for a quick route into someone’s soft nether regions. Our CEO breaks into comms with an excited utterance about an offline faction POS tower with loot a’plenty. Orders were given pilots to grab a hauler, some stealth bombers, and for me to roll out in just my pod in case there was a ship to steal in the SMA.

We gathered at the wormhole entrance and waited for orders to jump in. Our glorious leader approached the tower as the rest of greedily cackled about the loot-fest we were anticipating. Sadly, avarice does not promote sound decision making. No one had looked beyond the lack of a force field to determine the state of affairs. The tiny ‘Online’ tag on the tower was clearly meaningless and dutifully ignored by everyone involved. Until the guns started shooting.

No sooner than our FC had uncloaked, he found himself locked, jammed, and summarily relieved of his vessel. In the following confused moments we pieced together what had happened. Hearty, laughter-filled praise was heaped upon the tower’s owners. In addition to having no force field, the tower had a Mobile Tractor Unit placed in a cluster of guns. There were no wrecks to be seen and the guns would de-cloak anyone looking appraching the MTU. There will no doubt be many who would not have fallen for this ruse but none the less, it was a fun experience and I thank the clever bastard who put it together.

Your drinking buddy,

Rupert Foulmouth

I feel the best FC usually wins. The best FC has the best intel and that means he’ll probably have the right ships and numbers.

This is actually very common in WH-Space. I see such a POS almost every week while Chain-Scanning. The SMAs usually have on or two shuttles, and thats it. It is a good trap when you don´t look closely

would be a better article with some pics of such towers tho, not just a meme picture

sure we all know what it looks like but would still flesh this out a bit more

I am so f/cking confused by this news article! No force field yet the guns were working? Offline POS that was actually online? Yet no force field? I read this crap 3 times to determine if I missed a crucial piece of information, alas, I am still bewildered. Please, can I have someone translate this news article into coherent English. Thanks.

The English is just fine, you are just lacking pos mechanics knowledge.

When you online a POS it does not have a forcefield instantly. It will only have a forcefield once you set a password for your POS. As long as you do not set a password there is no forcefield.

This however is a oneway action, once set it can not be removed.

Lol college prof ehh? Well if you re read the second paragraph you will see the op say that they were all greedily staring at the loot to be had and no one looked past the lack of a pos shield and the “online” tag was dutifully ignored by all. Lol how you missed that every time you read the article is beyond me…..

“Our CEO breaks into comms with an excited utterance about an offline
faction POS tower” Does the tower show offline too when a password is not set? I live out of a POS so I do understand POS mechanics. This article is not clear and quite contradictory.

          Nooo, read it.

FC: “no pos shields, the tower therefore must be offline!!! YAAAY LOOT, quickly let’s kill it!”
Pos online without active shield, owners laugh when the kills come in.

Common practise especially in lower classes wormholes.

It´s quite simple and not very new.
You anchor up your tower, fuel and stront it and online it without entering a Force Field Password into the management menu. When the timer ends you can witness an online tower without FF. Now just anchor the modules you want on it.

The reason Rooks and Kings seem “to set the benchmark” for traps and fighting against the odds is very simple: They are doing it publicly by releasing well edited videos of their operations.
Sure, they deserve credit for this (and LM’s awesome voice over ofc), but most of their videos are showing well performed or polished copies of ideas other players allready performed before.
And actually they haven´t done anything new for years now. The videos are full of material from 2012 and before.

This is quite true. From what I can tell, Rooks and Kings now consists of around 8 guys who hotdrop single ships. They have indeed fallen on hard times.

They’ve always had a long time gap between doing stuff and showing it and I expect this year will cover 2013. For a small group they’ve driven forward the meta many times and hopefully keep playing Eve to do it again.

This article was a bit short. No screen grabs of the tower or anything? But it did remind me to watch the false tower video again

Then you should take a look at their killboard and ask yourself: What have RnK done in 2013/2014 besides smartbombing and 0815 ganks?

being pipebombed (and piped again , and again) is probably the most dramatic fleet death I’ve had in the past two years, and this kind of thing looks pretty fun: http://rooksandkings.com/killboard/?a=kill_related&kll_id=48451 Sexy nestors vs guardians.

Senex Legio has a very similar POS set up in M-M. They light a cyno inside a bunch of guns and bubbles. Randoms warp to the cyno, get dragged, and then killed.

SENX’s bait POS is also somewhat effective because it is only a few thousand kilometers from the station. If you’re not paying close attention when jumping into M-M, it will initially appear on your overview that the cyno is on the station and not at a POS.

They thought they had an easy kill or a nice piece of loot because the forcefield was down. Unfortunately the owners of the forcefield still had its guns on and they placed a mobile tractor unit between the guns which affectively decloaked them when they got close. The guns killed them, and the mobile tractor unit scooped the wrecks. In hunter became the hunted.

  22. I’m a freshman in college and I was planning on majoring in Computer Engineering, but unfortunately it doesn’t really seem too interesting to me, especially all the computer programming. I’m considering changing my major to Computer Science except I don’t really know what kind of career a degree in Computer Science will get me. So what is the difference between the two? Please help me out, I don’t really have too much time to ask the advisers at my university, so any help would be appreciated..
