Opinion: You Don’t Speak For Me!

October 2, 2014

To preface this I would like to say that this is completely my own opinion, and I don’t claim to speak for Eve News 24, or any other Eve Online players.

Recently a letter was written up a signed regarding future changes in Eve and a request by the authors for a particular future model. This letter was also signed by CSM members and then a few Alliance and coalition leaders. What complete garbage!

This writing is not referring to the content of the letter, which this is not about. My problem lies completely with the fact that these EVE players feel they can write up a letter asking for changes to a significant sector of the game. While it seems pretty harmless, the problem comes when these players then infer that they were speaking for the EVE community as a whole.

The CSM are elected by us and so there is no argument with what they have to say, and with them discussing changes with CCP. I however completely and utterly disagree with other non-elected Eve personalities opening the mouth so to speak, on matters and then claiming to represent the community as a whole. Unlike the CSM, these Eve personalities are not voted into positions of power; they are not elected by us to represent us in any way. Yes, most if not all hole leadership positions in their respective alliances. But I nor you as a reader, not even the members of their coalitions, had any say in them being in those positions of power.

Corebloodbrothers, himself an elected CSM official, yesterday made a statement to his alliance regarding this topic. In his statement, he said “Thanks for breaking it, and don’t have to balls to fix it and now bitch at CCP Games over it”. This is very much a sentiment I agree with. These Alliance leaders are the same leaders who currently hold agreements prohibiting certain aspects of game play. They are actively holding back content to benefit themselves. Any argument made that says that these agreements help anyone, but these leaders are entirely false.

The current breakdown of Null sec is a complete joke, there are 3,524 null-sec or lower security systems (of which 230 are not interconnected) not including wormhole space. That means 3,294 systems, all of these systems are broken down between exactly five coalitions, FIVE! The sad fact is that the leadership of all these alliances has actively brought about this situation, they chose who to blue up, they choose who they fight and don’t fight. There is no conceivable way that any outside entity could ever come and attempt to get involved without first joining one of these five coalitions. There is no way of matching them financially or in weapons and numbers. That means that the only way change could ever actively be brought about is for these leaders to decide it should happen.

Changing mechanics can and will change the way the game is played, for everyone. However, no mechanic change will ever activity create content, anyone who thinks it will is naïve. The only way the only way content is created is when people in positions of power decide it should happen. The player base has no way of deciding who runs an alliance or who makes decisions for them unfortunately. The saddest thing is that content is not in the best interest of some. As they are happy to earn money off a game others pay to play. RMT does exist, I make no accusations as to who does or does not take part, but it does effect some people’s decision. And if these people happen to be in positions of power it does affect the rest of the player base.

In concluding. I resent anyone speaking for me, and therefore will not myself claim to speak for others. CCP Games should change the game; they should introduce new and interesting mechanics. However, we as players have to create our content with whatever mechanics CCP Games provides us. If we get ourselves into a negative situation, it is our fault, not anyone else. This fault most be laid upon our leaders, who make the decision, only they have the power to introduce change.
