Faction Warfare Interviews: Mira DeVorsha and Eve Austerity

July 9, 2014

Considering my Eve career began in Faction Warfare, I decided to interview prominent members in the the militias of the 4 empires. For my first interview, I chose Caldari Fleet Commanders Mira  DeVorsha and Eve Austerity, and talked to them about their careers in the CalMil and how they came to be two of the most know members of the State Proctorate.

Ok Eve, how did you start getting in to the CalMil?

Eve Austerity > I was always interested in joining faction warfare but my previous corp was a null training corp which lived first in null and then in a WH – when i left that corp i took a break and when I came back wanted something with a lot more PVP. I looked around and FW seemed to provide the answer. None of the waiting around involved in nullsec and less scanning like life in a WH, so i joined fw and calmil.

Ok so Mira how long have you been in the calmil when you met Eve?

Mira deVorsha > Same as Eve really i have tried everything. I was part of FCON and once i left there i took a break when coming back to the game a friend was in Caldari and i joined the once Alliance Southern Renegades. – After FC’ing here I started my own corp. I have been here for quite some time now. Eve himself was part of a corporation within HECON alliance. He came to me and asked if I could give him some pointers I gave him what I could in a Mail/Chat channel. After a short time Eve decided to come to GHIOT. After a short time here he asked me if it would be possible to spend some time with him to help himlearn the ins and outs. I gave him some Advice on where to start and back seated for quite some time I informed him it would not be easy and I would push (him)to his limits.

So you consider him more of a comrade than a student?

To start with he was my Student if you like. Now he’s my Military director. He even jokes about a Star Wars Statement. My young Apprentice – One day the student will be the master. And now he is.

Ok. Eve how long did it take for you to learn the ropes of commanding a fleet?

quite a while lol in terms of actual hours played – my first attempt at starting a fleet had 5 wings and no squads.

Sounds hard to control.

then it was a matter of learning all the ships bonuses – working out if your fleet could take the enemy things like that come with learning

Mira suggested my first step should be to learn the bonuses of the hulls which would provide and indication of how they were fit.

Mira what was the most frustrating thing to teach eve when it came to being a FC?

I’m not a sit back and explain thing sort of person. Its listen and learn ask questions later. Trying to explain stuff to Any FC while your fighting is hard.

When i handed over my first fleet. I said “go do this”.

How did that go?

I had t sit back and not say anything Even though I wanted to say don’t do this, don’t do that, don’t take this, don’t take that.

In the end we used Channel commander and things moved alone Smoothly.

That’s good to know.

Eve was a hard person to train as he has read more information than anyone I know. So when he was reading about Nullsec and other stuff that didn’t work for FW getting him away from that was a pain in the ass, but it was nice to know he was really up for learning.

Ok, last question is for Eve. are there any tips you have for new FW Pilots on fleet commanding?

hulls, hulls and hulls – you have to know the bonus – join Mira’s fleets and listen and watch how things unfold on the tactical map from that u can learn a lot. Watch videos  Youtube is full of epic fights – get people to record your fights and look atwhat you could do differently after IE how to improve. Respect peoples ships – I always say an fc is one brick in the stack that makes the house – people have to spend isk on them from the new bro to the old timer and most importantly FC as often as possible. Learn by doing it.

Ok what about you Mira?

Learning to FC is hard, Takes time, You don’t just need to know your Enemies you need to know your friends. Don’t get to big for your boots and be ready to take criticism because your going to get it all day long! – Never take a fight you are not sure about

If you are sitting there thinking maybe maybe maybe Say no. Don’t waste your fleet for something that looks amazing there is always something else going on.

Learning from someone who knows is good, But remember every FC has his own game Style.

Just because you do something different doesn’t mean its wrong. Just different.

I’d just like to add for new people getting into eve and older players looking for something faster fw is really the place to be – I recomend it to anybody – And its always a pleasure to kill Gallente!

It’s a pleasure to lead ghiot fleets our line members are first class and always up for fleeting up and getting involved – an FC with no fleet it like a duck with no water!
