CSM 13 Candidate Overview

May 29, 2018

(The views and expressions here are that of the author and not that of their Corporation, Alliance or EN24. The author is a member of Provi-Bloc and hopes the information provided is unbiased and helpful to all readers and candidates.)

The race for CSM positions is a yearly event in which EVE players put forth their names to become one of the next voices of our beloved community. According to CCP:

The Council of Stellar Management is a player advocacy group, consisting of 10 members democratically elected by the players to advise and assist CCP in the continuous development of EVE. The CSM brings focused, structured feedback from the community to CCP and represents its views and interests.

What might come as a surprise is that the candidates for these positions come from all walks of life, and comprise some of the brightest and most qualified individuals in the community. There is a large wealth of knowledge and game play experience between all the candidates. It was a challenge to try to lump many of these potential candidates in categories such as High Sec, Low Sec, Null, and Wormhole, mainly because many of these individuals operate in multiple areas or even wish to represent all people equally not just a certain group in the game. So I placed them in categories by areas in which they openly claimed their from. This is backed by looking into each person’s corporation/Alliance for where they usually roam.

We have multiple returning CSMs coming back for another election: Aryth, Jin’taan, Suitonia, Xenuria, The Judge, Innominate and Steve Ronuken, all of whom are excellent members of our community that have helped advise CCP about the wishes and wants of WE the players. We have everything from professional politicians and lobbyists like Brisc Rubal, who actually testified before the American Congress, to IT Directors of Fortune 100 companies like Silver Suspiria. We have experts in niches in the game such as tournament play by Bei Artjay who has helped bring tournaments and meet-ups into the wider community, working with CCP to bring tournament play to the masses. Another group that deserves to be mentioned are disabled players in EVE Online. Arielle en Distel is legally blind and hopes to aid other disabled players in the game.

We have famous names that are part of our community through podcasts, Youtube channels and fleet commanding such as Killah Bee, ExookiZ, and Jin’taan. We even have other famous names in the running like The Judge who gained infamy through his actions betraying CO2 to Goonswarm Federation.

I placed candidates in their positions because they are either from corporations/alliances that are in those regions, mainly have experience in that area or openly advocated for people there.

Null Sec.

It will be interesting to see how Provi-Bloc votes as its traditional voice in the CSM was Jin’taan. However, he has now left Provi-Bloc while they were in the middle of a brutal war against Pandemic Legion, to go to TEST. Currently the only Provi-Bloc candidate is Carbon Alabel.

Wormhole space

The average Wormhole candidate in this year’s running is chock full of experience. Some of the old vets are Tifida, Kali Omega, Claevyan, Razorblade92, and ExookiZ all of which have around a decade of game experience apiece. While all of these candidates are wormholers, a common aspect is the fierce PVP streak in most of them, while ExookiZ has a unique outlook as he usually runs a Corporations out of such areas. Then there are players like Claevyan and Cwittofur Cesaille that have backgrounds in building industry as well.

Low Sec/Faction Warfare

The Low Sec candidates have unique skill sets within and outside the game. From Silver Suspiria who has worked on several advisory boards in real life organizations to Faction Warfare focused Kalen Tsero. Saint Michaels Soul is mainly focused on the ecology of all of Low Sec and wishes to make sure CCP focus on the development of the region.

High Sec/Industry Focus

For High Sec, we have people like Steve Ronuken who has served on the CSM in the past and is heavy 3rd party contributor. Other notable candidates are Chainsaw Plankton who has a background in Piracy. His counterpoint to this is Lorelei Ierendi, who is focused on Industry.

Only 6 of the previous 10 CSM candidates are running again, ensuring at least some new blood will be able to get in to help guide the Council. While each candidate inhabits their own specific niche, they will all be asked questions on the topics that face players in EVE Online. In this year’s running, many fresh faces have placed their names into the ring. This does not necessarily mean they are new to EVE, as the average candidate has long years of experience behind them.

In the past CSM the group that had the most seats on the CSM board was that of Goonswarm Federation. Goonswarm has the chance of having two to even three people on the CSM. However, with so many candidates running from various power blocks this should make a interesting race for the CSM board in the coming year.

For now, good reader, do not take my word on these candidates. Do your due diligence and research the candidates that are presented before you to identify and support the person whom YOU believe will best help the game from your perspective. The CSM elections begin soon so check the links on the names of the individuals to see the platform in which they are running for. So do your own research and vote accordingly.

Very Respectfully,

Kyle Saltz,
