Mad Online: When Smack Talk Turns to Cringe

April 22, 2018

By Seraph IX Basarab

I’ve been writing about Eve since 2011. Throughout my time doing so, I’ve mostly focused on Eve politics critiquing the ongoings of nullsec alliances. More often than not I have been harsh where I felt that it was needed and leveled criticism where it was merited. I have criticized my own alliance’s actions during the Dotbro Wars, as well as the more recent war in Tribute in late 2016. Regardless of how I’ve critiqued alliances, I have always had the rule to keep things in-game. Unsurprisingly spaceship nerds get mad when you point out problems in their spaceship guild. And it’s fine if people want to have some bantz back and forth. I’ll play it up on my end too kind of like a villain in a wrestling match. I’ll get pretty edgy with some of the dark humor and certainly reciprocate some of the harsh attitudes displayed when people get out of hand. I am by no means a “politically correct” type. “HTFU” is something that really appealed to me in Eve.

However, one phenomenon that I find intriguing is when people get personal right off the bat and often out of the blue. I’m sure everyone has seen “rage posts” on Reddit where some miner gets ganked and he starts flipping out with the vilest and personal type of attacks in an unholy mix of cringe and hilarity. You can’t help but stare at the train wreck. It’s no surprise that I attract the attention of a lot of people who get Mad Online ™ but one particular group that is exceptionally butt bothered by me is, of course, members of Goonswarm. Enter Alp Khan, self-proclaimed very important person of Theta Squad which I guess is some kind of SIG. For a couple of years now, Alp has had the habit of randomly attacking me because of my nationality and ethnic background. Completely unprompted, out of the blue, just full blown rage. Mind you there are several instances of the guy doing this. This is just the latest one which I found distinctly cringe-worthy.

These are logs from the Eve discord Reddit channel. My name on it is “Feels Runner 2049”.

Some highlights from the conversation:

“I’m talking about the revocation of your illegally attained citizenship, And your deportation back to Romania.”

“Any citizenship that has been attained under false pretenses would be illegally attained. I’m fairly certain this is the case with you”

“You sir have outstayed your welcome. And should be going back to the country which your parents came from”

“What actually is cringy here is when some random no gooder from a random shithole in Eastern Europe shows up in these United States to become a leech and a parasite sucking down the very soul and welfare of this great country.”

“You’ve been on welfare and you’ve clearly lied to a federal agent of the government of the United States. That’s a federal offense”

So I’m sitting there wondering what could possibly make this guy this ass blasted that he’s going on and on like this. Here’s the hilarious part. After asking him what his reason was for this was, his reply is my writing here on EN24. This guy is THAT mad that I wrote some articles about his internet space guild. And don’t get me wrong. I don’t mind bantz online or even shit talking with one another. My feelings weren’t hurt. I’m not calling for anyone to do anything to the guy for doing this. My goal is simply to point out and what a sad state someone can descend to when they get so mad about video games. This is an important discussion to have, especially for newer players to Eve who may confuse the “HTFU” theme with encouragement to be a wreck of a human being like this.

Keep it in game guys. Sure you might get mad at an instance and something flies out, but getting that mad just makes your opponent feel validated. Don’t give them the satisfaction of knowing they have you that rustled. It’s just sad that someone would get this upset about a video game that they would go to such lengths to try to attack someone. All it tells me is that I’m pushing the right buttons. But I’ll always keep those buttons within Eve Online.
