Darwinism In Action: The Chremoas kill that shouldn’t have been.

January 19, 2018

Keenly eyed killmail aficionados might have noticed a high profile Chremoas kill featured this week on zKillboard which went down by the hand of a puny T1 Algos destroyer in the Nikkishina solar system in The Citadel region.

I tried to talk to the Chremoas pilot, but he always seemed to be offline – a rage quit maybe? – I thought. Life went on, and I focused on other in-game events. As such the kill went off my radar. Differently, than me, r/EVE Reddit has a better long-term memory than I have and mailed the Algos pilot, Nado Mia, inquiring on the kill.

Nado Mia – a Japanese EVE online capsuleer – relates his background as a young player (12 million skill points) who does faction warfare loyalty point farming for a living. While minding his business on the smaller PVE site, Makaan Onzo, the Chremoas pilot warped in and quickly grabbed point of the inexperienced Algos. Fearing for his ship, Nado Mia turned up his micro warp drive in an attempt to break out of point range while recalling his drones. Looking to further his chances to escape, Nado Mia decided to put ECM drones on the Chremoas, but apparently, he did it in such haste that damage drones where selected instead.

I ordered my drones to attack the Chremoas, and I shot my opponent’s drone with my “Dual Modulated Light Energy Beam I”. The Chremoas went down before my ship (my ship was almost dead, maybe hull HP remained less than half). The fact I stress is that I didn’t (couldn’t) point him and didn’t give him huge alpha damage (I had Beam gun and I shot drones). He could warp out anytime.

After Chremoas down, I looted from wrecks and I was surprised it was over 1bisk worth items. At that time I didn’t notice Chremoas is very expensive ship. I noticed it when I saw zkillboad.

I have to say, this is the sort of story that make me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside. An inexperienced pilot getting the best of one of the most expensive ships flown in game, and all in part because he selected the wrong attack drones. The fact that the Chremoas was never pointed and went down due to its pilot’s miscalculation – or even worse, greed – only makes it a better tale.

Talk about causality.
