A Memorial Fleet: Remembering Hurlbut

March 7, 2016

The fleet of mostly Harbingers ended at roughly 22:35 evetime with a 32 billion isk in losses in the system of B-DBYQ, fountain Region. But, that’s not where it began.

A few days prior, a cyno light vigil was held in honor of the fallen eve player and a plan was hatched to hold a roam in his honor. They made plans with CAS to battle in their home system sometime around 21:00 evetime. However, the firepower was much larger than CAS anticipated for the memorial fleet and as the fleet approached, they were politely turned away one jump out from their original destination.

No hard feelings between them, the group set off to find another group to engage with. However, before they started burning jumps attempting to engage Goons, Gartrox says, “Gumshoe Nosfera had the idea of having a fight with Tishu, his alliance.” Temporarily switching sides Gumshoe FC’d for the Bad Intention Memorial fleet, while Lich Reaper, FC’d for Gumshoe’s own alliance.

I asked Gumshoe how his alliance felt about him FCing against them and winning.
“My alliance is not happy with me at the moment. lmao”

Tishu took out a fleet of Sleipnir’s with chimera triage support in FD53-H versus the Harbinger fleet. With the superior triage of 3 archons and dead dps, the Tishu fleet was overwhelmed and destoryed with minimal losses to the Bad Intention Memorial Fleet.

Full battle report can be seen here

After the battle was over, the remaining members of Tishu joined the fleet and they set off towards Goon space seeking a battle. As they entered B-DBYQ to start their journey towards SMA space, Broody Viper, a member of culture called out to them in local to come to J5A-IX for a fight. Gumshoe Nosfera simply responded with “ok” and turned the fleet towards J5A in anticipation of a fight.

On culture’s end, the group had been reported in intel and several pings went out to alliance leadership. Wasting no time, they formed up 100 man ferox fleet with triage support within 5 minutes. The order to undock and warp to the B-D gate was called by Culture FC’s Raknor as dreads remained docked on stand-by.

The Bad Intention’s fleet sat on the other side of the gate apparently waiting for Culture to engage them, as they sat at optimal range for their harbingers. The Culture fleet jumped through and held cloak for a moment before anchoring up and opening fire. Initially the fight was even, with losses being taken on both sides. However, with the advantage of numbers, as Culture alpha’d Harbinger after Harbinger off the field Bad Intention’s dps fell swiftly. Fallen Ferox pilots quickly reshipped in their home system next door, soon enough Bad Intention they were unable to break any further Culture Ferox’s.

As the battle ensued, soon only the Bad intention capitals and one vindicator were left on the field. Raknor called their Thanatos the new primary. After a few minutes, the Culture fleet was only able to kill one of the Archon’s and remained unable to break the triage tank on the other capitals as they had refit to Kinetic / Thermal tank against the Ferox fleet. The Culture FC called 3 dreads to undock and jump into the battle to help break the 3 remaining carriers. As the culture dreads prepared to come in and finish off the fleet, Culture turned towards the now re-sieged token phoenix, brought in honor of Hurlbut as it was his favorite capital.

Just as the last of the Phoenix’s structure dropped, Culture dreads hit siege and within a minute the remaining carriers and vindicator had been wiped out.

After everything was said and done just under 32 billion isk was destroyed on the side of Bad minion with Culture losing roughly 1.3 billion isk.
Video recap of the fight from culture’s view can be seen here.

I asked each of the members I interviewed if they had anything to add about either the battle or about Hurlbut.

Gartrox: “He was a founder of this alliance and a close friend of several people in, including the leaders of Tishu. We decided to have a roam and frag people in his name. Hurl was one of the few people in this game that I consider to be a good friend and mentor. He was one of the nicest and kindest people I have ever met; even when he lost in game he was extremely generous with compliments and rarely flew without a smile on his face.”

STU MINER: “In his honor we used Hurls two fav ships the Phoenix and the Harby.
It was nice though, enemies from all across eve coming together to shoot shit in remembrance of Hurl. Hurl really was a great guy, though, truly and I’d like to thank CCP again for coming to honor Hurl at the eve monument.”

Gumshoe Nosfera: “It was a ton of fun and Hurl would have enjoyed it for sure =)”

RIP: Hurlbut.
