Darkspawn hacking their member base

August 9, 2014

EVE-Online brings people from all countries and cultures together, however different languages are separating it once again, especially when using different scripts. Because of these circumstances it took four days for the news to reach the western based public.

According to this forum entry on the eve-ru forums Darkspawn leadership asked its members to install a browser plugin pretending it was necessary for teamspeak connection. Suspicion arises and a contest to reveal the code of the heavily encrypted plugin was called, with 8 Plex as reward for the first person able to decompile and explain the functionalities of the plug in.

After combined effort finally revealed the source code It turns out that the plug-in was ostensibly aimed at stopping people from recording Teamspeak, but that it also located and searched through their eve log folders and uploaded the results where it was required, It also communicated the user’s IP address to Darkspawn, which would be handy for spotting the real IP of people using a proxy to avoid detection. It also allegedly acted as a keylogger.

How the Darkspawn member base and associates will react to this impudent attempt of hacking remains to be seen, but a lot of drama is expected within the next days.
