On the Providence region and its most common misconceptions…

July 4, 2014

The region of Providence is a unique area of space bordering the Domain, Derelik, Devoid Tash-Murkon and Catch regions. Settled over ten years ago by radical loyalist devoted to the Amarr Empire, today Providence is a multi-cultural sector of space with a long and unique history of warfare, camaraderie, and roleplay. As a result, numerous misconceptions have risen regarding Providence. I am here to clear up just a few of them.

Misc. # 1: Providence is ruled by the CVA and everyone else pays rent to live there

Years ago this might have been true, when infrastructure around Providence was being still being built. Today, it is a different story. The Curatores Veritatis Alliance (CVA) is still in Providence and is often seen taking the central leadership role in the affairs of the Providence bloc; however, in recent years many other leaders from other resident alliances and corporations have been taking very active roles in fleet commanding, logistics and even as members of the Council of Stellar Management, both present and future.
In reality, Providence is settled and ruled by a coalition of 9 different alliances including: the CVA, The Fourth District, Care Factor, Sev3rance, Volition Cult, Yulai Federation, Apocalypse Now., TSOE Consortium and Silent Infinity. In addition to these there are also dozens, perhaps hundreds of smaller corporations and alliances who call Providence home, participating both in defense fleets and helping to make use of Providence’s resources. It should be noted that not one of these corporations pays any form of rent for use of the systems.

Misc. # 2: Not Red, Don’t Shoot (NRDS) is not a realistic rule of engagement in modern Eve Online.

This is one of the more touchy subjects in the coalition, so I will try to keep it short. NRDS comes from a time long since past in Eve; and, Providence is the last bastion of it remaining. That being said it works, but for Providence only. A new entity trying to move to NRDS faces massive difficulties but in Providence, the engagement rules and standings have been set for many years, and most of our local reds are repeat offenders. Rarely does an entirely new entity come to Providence with a large fleet, with little warning and no standings set. In nearly all cases it is a single pilot who decides to pirate on their own, not caring about future consequences.

Many in Providence do not necessarily agree with the rules of engagement, but there are very few who ignore it. Even then, they only ever do so once.

Misc. # 3: The overall friendliness and NRDS attitude for Providence make it a good spot for brand new pilots to get their first tastes of nullsec.

This is somewhat true. While you generally will not be shot on sight, one has to remember that at the end of the day, Providence is still nullsec, not “lower lowsec.” People can be a bit mistrusting of new neutral pilots and because of the dense population, there are many roaming enemy fleets raiding the area. Losses can be annoying, even if they are not your own, and they have consequences in that they encourage more roaming fleets to return.

Misc. # 4: Providence is a boring region.

Quite the opposite! There are frequent roaming enemy fleets to dispose of, as well as coalition fleets. On occasion a larger entity will attempt to “generate content” by forcing a fight using the occasional Sovereignty Blockade Unit or other method of luring in larger fleets for a large battle. In between the fleets there is plenty of exploration, mining and ratting to be done within our own alliances, or with friends. Wormholes are frequent and lead to other nullsec regions or Sleeper space and allow yet another avenue of exploration, mystery and most importantly: profit.

Misc. 5: Providence is full of noobs, and it is easy to get quick kills.

While Providence is host to some younger pilots, enemy fleets are ruthlessly pursued across Providence until they either leave, or are annihilated. Youth brings aggression and the desire to see enemies destroyed. Many of our pilots are, first and foremost, PVPers and are delighted to hunt enemy fleets and defend their homes from constant raids. Fleets are plentiful and numerous, and many enemies are shocked to see how quickly a defense fleet can be formed when they are first spotted.

Providence is home to an abundant number of experienced, and aspiring fleet commanders who love to hone their skills on unprepared enemy fleets.
