Eve produces a lot of things from tears, to friendships, most of Iceland’s GDP, to speculative informal essay articles of relative importance with which I somehow manage to frustrate so many tryhard neckbeards posting with their alts. Don’t expect some revolutionary revelation you insta gratification addict you. This is one of those articles and by the end I hope to make you as upset as possible.
Alright maybe not. I’m not really one of those types of people that finds their self importance in harvesting “tears” and rageposts. I can try to pretend that I am at times for the sake of Eve appearances. I cannot say, however, that certain episodes of frustration from previous articles has not made me smirk. What comes to mind was when I made a vague statement concerning some Eve entity and communism. In retaliation I had several internet commissars coming out of the woodwork claiming my ignorance on the subject and explaining the virtues of the international proletariat. Very serious stuff.
If articles were bars, I wouldn’t be the type serving shots straight down. I’d have the patio and the wine. A surprising amount of people here actually appreciate that, but you also have the guys that just “wanna have a shot bruh” meaning they want short quick blocks of text getting to the point and letting you go on about your day. That’s not the experience that I want to provide. As a historian (little h for now, I’ll wait a few more decades more) I could riddle your internet screen with dry ibid bits, but seeing that i’m reserving that methodology for more important subjects, you’ll just have to be happy with my patio wine rambling.
Fountain War in retrospect
So this summer, perhaps the most relevant 0.0 political change is of course the Fountain War. You had the G8 of Eve entities fighting it out with the result being a full TEST/Tribal evacuation of Fountain, Delve and Period Basis in favor of the GoonFed led CFC. Let us now consider some factors that brought us to the present state of events.
The Goons are winning Eve. Put all your butthurt and rage away, step away from your own bias, frustration, self victimization and cries of injustice. They simply are. They have a beautifully organized coalition, dedicated leadership, a vision of what they want to be and their sights on their goals. I’ll just say it. They’re the Roman Empire of Eve. Now I know some of you are going to jump out of your chairs and list to me all the ways they are not. To you I say, shut up, don’t care, it’s not a direct correlation, please stop, nobody is impressed. But for all intensive purposes, they are Eve’s Roman Empire. They’ve created a coalition of alliances that are just strong enough to be useful, but too weak to challenge their primacy. When TEST stopped filling that role, they were axed. The CFC invasion of Fountain did not happen with Montolio sitting at the helm, the supposedly crazy guy that wanted to have not fun sov war, nor when those other guys nobody cares to remember ran the alliance, but once Booda took over. And then sov war became fun again.
Now I poke a bit of fun at the CFC’s narrative concerning the invasion of Fountain, but by all means it was a very smart and capable move. Now I never really buy into conspiracy theories neither in the real world or in Eve. It isn’t because I don’t think people make these plans and then attempt to follow through, but because human nature is so unpredictable, rarely does the conspiracy’s initial goal and result match. The CFC probably had a general idea of how they wanted to pursue this war, pulled what strings they could and things fell into place in part due to their planning and in part due to random causality. In any case Fountain was struck at the optimal time. Montolio’s departure from the leadership caused unrest within TEST. Worse of all, ever since TEST and PL had their fling, many of the capable people jumped over to PL. After all you get tired of being in the “shit alliance” and it’s nice to be seen as “elite” simply by virtue of the entity that you fall under.
In any case, with all of the CFC’s comical early campaign problems such as losing their station egg to welping some fairly sizable fleets, one factor was known to all the people of position in the war. TEST didn’t really have an officer class. If there ever had been capable TEST FCs, not too many were present any longer. In essence, TEST was completely reliant on N3′s field leadership. Unfortunately TEST never held 0.0 sov by its own merit. And I don’t mean to be harsh here, but let’s face it. The Goons made, fed, organized and developed TEST. Without that crutch, it was only a matter of time before sov was lost. Only now can TEST truly develop itself and I for one look forward to see where Booda takes TEST. I was glad to see that he took TEST to an NPC 0.0 region as suggested to develop FCs via small gang. Anyway, getting back to our war, TEST was only going to stand a chance in Fountain for as long as N3 + PL thought there was a chance to inflict casualties on the CFC. Although Nulli drew a line in the sand stating that the raison detre of N3 was to destroy the CFC, NCdot knew better than to provide propaganda points for the CFC. Drawing a line in the sand means you have to stay and defend it rather than take steps back and farm kills. PL knew better than anyone, if you don’t claim something outright then nobody can say they took it from you. All in all you had the major factor of distrust between N3/PL’s officer class and TEST’s grunt level capabilities.
Who could say what would have happened if N3/PL went full in and committed all resources both “physical” and intellectual. In the end, the fall of Fountain was a triumph of organization and logistics on the part of The CFC. The more interesting aspect of the war’s results is the shift in CFC ideology, specifically the Goon idea concerning renting and scamming.
Before….renting = bad….scamming = good
Now…renting = good….scamming = bad
This is not a criticism, simply stating that the ideological shift has been a complete 180 and while certain leaders and line members will try to bend every which way to make it not seem like a contradiction. However, truth be told, this is exactly the “farms and fields” idea that’s been expressed previously. Renters are a good thing. They bring people out of High Sec where 10v1 insta popping things off the Jita undock is considered pvp and settles the wide expanses of 0.0 where pvp can vary from small gang to megalithic blobathons. There’s no real point in trying to poke the CFC in the eye over a renting program. Of course you’re going to use your territory to profit off of it and complaining about it changes nothing. The CFC, and of course the Goons, will be here for as long as rival entities like N3 avoid direct conflict with them.
Goons’ break up with Pandemic Legion… …oh hey there sexy Black Legion how you doin’?
Well, what can I say. This is what happens when you base your relationships on material things like tech. Sure PL, you’re the sexy blonde bombshell that everyone secretly covets even if to your face they may be standoffish at first and swear they hate you, they’ll come around *cough* Makalu *cough*. But some say you might be getting a little old. The lines and wrinkles are starting to show, and usually that wouldn’t matter since you can still turn the tricks easy enough, you got the experience, the longevity, the assets etc. You still scare the crap out of pretty much anyone flying anything bigger than a battleship. But you aren’t the only one in the picture. Who’s that raven haired 22 year old vixen we keep hearing about? Oh that’s Black Legion…no she won’t commit to a relationship but she won’t leave her shit over the CFC’s house either. She takes her pay in the morning, she’s in the bar making out with whoever she wants cause she does what she wants when she wants wherever she wants, wuteva wuteva.
Alright enough of that non sense. The point being made here is that the CFC had originally maintained good relations with Pandemic Legion via the tech cartel. With that gone, they periodically hire/pay tribute to Black Legion to add a little extra oomph in a particular region…or just pay not to get oomphed. The rivalry between the two Legions further divide them into their specific camps. Although BL is not an outright member of the CFC by any stretch of the imagination, and often do break their stuff, the CFC knows BL won’t actually challenge the CFC on anything meaningful and a little bit of money really greases the wheels. PL so far has been a pretty good ally of the N3 coalition minus a Nulli Nyx altercation.
There seemed to be a really good chance that the two Legions would clash in Querious. NCdot initially said they would answer the challenge but since BL ditched Retirement Club hard, it seems NCdot is now taking up hunting up north instead. All in all I really look forward to a possible meaningful conflict between the two and seeing how the fie of BL matches up with the experience of PL. Both have their strengths and weaknesses although they both fall under the “elite nomad catagory.” In truth they both bleed just as any other alliance. In large part this image of untouchability comes from never providing an enemy a viable target to hit. Time will tell if PL maintains the mantle it has always held and if BL fizzles out. Although I could be wrong, I feel as though BL lacks a specific goal or aim for their existance. Then again I’ve always been the type that wanted to play Eve for a reason beyond just stacking names on the killboard that doesn’t much matter in the long run. Others however are satisfied simply with that.
The South will Rise!
I spent a lot of time blowing up AAA + allies in HED-GP with Bombers Bar back in 2012 summer when fleet compositions rarely if ever numbered more than 14 or so bombers and if we got lucky some sort of recon support. Fleets went out every day, sometimes twice a day and on occassion we’d host week long “forever fleets” taxing anything we could passing through the system. I personally received two ransom offers, one from Cascade Imminent and one from a certain AAA FC at the time who out of respect to our agreement, won’t be named. A couple bil didn’t seem heavy enough in our pocket so nothing really came of it, but it was still good content and fun to have the interaction.
Even so it has been extremely pleasant to see AAA return out of NPC Stain and taking back their old territory. What can I say? I’ve always liked the story of the underdog which is why I have a level of respect for Russian alliances. Somewhere between the CFC led North/West and the N3 aligned South/East, there is an independent coalition composed of various Eastern European Alliances which could best be considered a sort of “Neo-StainWagon.” And I am truly curious to see where they go. Perhaps they will be nonchalant, unmotivated and fairly passive now that they have some sov. Perhaps we will see some East European zeal and fire. Just as likely, the various sides may fall to disagreement just as well. What can be said for sure however is that this “Neo-StainWagon” coalition has gone through many hardships that would have been the end of many other entities.
TEST in Curse
With some of the largest and most prominent corporations jumping to Goonswarm, it is hard to know what exactly TEST is left with aside from Dreddit.
I honestly don’t know if this is the case or not but it may be wise for TEST to ally with the N3 coalition and/or make friends with the newly reborn AAA and their allies. I would maintain the Curse deployment for the sake of small gang pvp experience as simply clumping with another entity right now brings TEST back to its original problem of having too many Indians and hardly any Chiefs. Unless there is some gross mismanagement of TEST narrative, I don’t see the alliance vanishing any time too soon. Being rooted in a non Eve community (Reddit) and having a large player base that have only known TEST from the very start, you are left with a fairly sizable number.
A last note
I just wanted to address the new EULA rule change. I’ve never been one to scam people as i’m too unmotivated to put that much effort into something like that. But I really think any constraint that CCP puts on an Eve player’s options hurts the community as a whole. Go after the RMTers and the botters. Leave the scammers alone. The wild wild west sand box type thing we got going is pretty nice, don’t screw it up. Also…Soundwave, Zulu….LoL? Seriously? Not even Dota2…but LoL?…
