We owed a proper battle report for SOLAR FLEET victory in the P7-45V solar system and here it is.
Last Friday several timers were coming up for SOLAR in P7-45V, Cache. Red Alliance had formed up an Armageddon fleet to do some shooting, counting on N3 to come in with slowcats to help for the structures. Seeing what was happening SOLAR formed a 130 Maelstrom fleet in response, together with a 30 man drake/welp cane fleet from SOLAR WING, jokersDOT and Protocol 13.
Order of Battle
Red Alliance started by incapacitating the cynojammer on a POS, although they lost several logistics ships to POS guns. Then they went to the I-Hub and started shooting it, with the N3 slowcat fleet jumping in to help taking the structure down. The SOLAR Maelstrom fleet warped in outside range from the combined N3/RA fleet (some 120-130 km), hoping to pick off some Red Alliance stragglers or anything that got within its range, yet unwilling to commit to a fight versus the N3 slowcat fleet.
At this point, whether because of miscommunication or hubris for feeling invincible, the Red Alliance FC committed a tactical mistake and decided to have his fleet MJD into the SOLAR FLEET. They jumped to 20-30 km on the SOLAR fleet and battle was joined. RED has close range battleships that could rip apart a Maelstrom fleet at short range, however because of the MJD they had left their logistic ships behind as well as leaving the protective sphere of the slowcat fleet which couldn’t rep or support them at that range, while also being unable to warp to them because they were below 150 km from them. This allowed SOLAR FLEET to make short work of the Red Alliance battleship fleet.
It was now when the N3 capital FC committed a tactical mistake as well. He managed to get a warpin towards the SOLAR fleet so he warped his slowcats towards them, without having any subcapital support. This was a grave mistake. The SOLAR Maelstrom fleet warped off to regroup and came back into the fray while SOLAR FLEET interdiction wing bubbled up the N3 slowcat fleet.
The SOLAR FC had judged the situation correctly: the N3 slowcat fleet was in an extremely vulnerable position and without subcap support. Supers were called in (23 of them) and cynoed in at 50 km and aligned out. They started to work on the N3 slowcats in earnest because they knew that they had only a small window of opportunity before N3 reinforcements arrived. And indeed, as soon as the N3 capital FC realized the precarious situation he was in, help requests were sent to N3 and Pandemic Legion to extract them from their predicament. Pandemic Legion formed in short order (other accounts mention that the PL super fleet was ready to hotdropone hour before shit hit the fan) however problems with a mid cyno that went to grab a sammich (well, dinner technically, but food related AFK welps are called this way nowadays) made them lose valuable minutes. SOLAR FLEET made very good use of this time, pounding carrier after carrier. RA cyno dictors that had cynoed in previously tried to burn towards the SOLAR supers fleet but they were shot down one by one. When the Pandemic Legion reinforcement fleet did arrive (about 30+ supers with an undetermined number of carriers) it was already too late. Over 47 slowcats had been killed and when PL cynoed in the SOLAR supers fleet disengaged and got out with the Maelstrom fleet following suit.
All in all it was a good fight. It showed very well the weaknesses of slowcat fleets; as any capital fleet it is very vulnerable without subcap support and can be countered even when outnumbered on the strategic level as long as one is ready to escalate and bring in a capital or supercapital fleet. The SOLAR FC did a great job. His situational awareness was very good; he made the right calls and executed his tactics in excellent fashion. SOLAR once more showed that they are true Slavic Vikings and it’s a joy fighting against them.
A SOLAR logi viking made some really nice videos from their side, here’s the links:
