FC: Ok folks the Rape Train is pulling out of the station!
I heard this in fleet comms in my new alliance and my head fell back so that when my eyes rolled I didn’t sprain something. Not one day in and already someone makes “the joke.”
Ok, look. I know that shock humor is “in” and that somehow includes Rape humor. Because Rape is hilarious. Because the 1 in 3 women and around 1 in 20 men don’t mind you making light of the experiences they’ve gone through, and never suffer from extreme psychological issues because of what happened to them. Because your ability to make a lame, unfunny joke is more important than them.
Rape isn’t funny. It’s so not funny that many third world countries use it as torture for political prisoners, or as part of ethnic warfare. Africa, South America, Asia, Europe, all across the world this horrible crime is used by men to oppress the female population.¹ When you joke about it, your joke has the same effect on the survivors of this crime. It is an oppressive act that is potentially IMMENSELY harmful to the survivors. Over at Afternoon Snooze Button they had a great post, for those of you in the Short Attention Span Theater crowd, I’ll post a nice summary she leaves at the bottom:
- Rape is a type of torture, and rape victims experience severe psychological trauma that goes well beyond the physical damage.
- The prevalence of sexual assault makes it much more likely that either a rapist or a rape victim will hear a given joke about rape.
- Rape jokes perpetuate our society’s fucked up belief that rape isn’t serious.
- Rape jokes empower would-be rapists.
- Rape jokes further harm the victims of rape.
Rape isn’t murder, where the odds of actually encountering it in the circle of people you know are vanishingly small. Rape occurs everywhere, especially in the US. 1 in 3 women is a survivor of rape. Odds are pretty good that this includes someone you know, even you making the terrible joke. That person may not mind it but I bet someone else does. I want more people playing EvE, and I want more women to feel free to join this community.
So let’s take a look at Rape Train. I think this definition is mostly what people are looking for when they use it in gaming:
This act usually happens during games, either in Sports or in a video game. The rape train refers to one completely destroying/conquering their adversaries, you cant just fuck up one person it has to be a majority. It is a rare act but when it happens everyone around is left in awe, speechless if you will. The person who initiated the rape train event deserves a firm pat on the ass or a much less gay high five with a verbal acknowledgement. The “Rape Trainer” must respond with sounds related to old steam driven trains from the 1800′s.
Despite being “frothing at the mouth” mad about the issue in general, having been on the right side of a night of total domination and ruination of my foes, I know that the desire to put into words just how harshly and totally one has crushed ones’ enemies demands to be met. Fine. Let’s not put the word “Rape” in there though. It doesn’t serve a purpose to enhance anything but the suffering of people to whom the only connection it has is to something horrible and hurtful. Let’s find a better train to ride.
Same challenge as last time. Whoever comes up with the best alternative to “Rape Train” to express the complete and utter domination of their enemies gets a shiny new plex in Jita 4-4.

As a female player of eve my only advise is grow the fook up! This isn't real life it's a fooking game and obviously rape train doesnt mean they are coming to literally rape you, …….You could also join WGOE chat and complain in there to your hearts content or undock and go kill the ppl who have offended you! Either way you need to back away from the keyboard and realize THIS IS A GAME!!

Part of a crime/Offense is intent. And I seriously doubt when they say "Man we raped them" they are thinking of the poor indigenous women in Africa or boys in Papa New Guinea . And further I know the Eve community is crass, rude ,extremely harsh and hostile and usually grumpy but in the end, when a RL tragedy happens like Vile`s did look at the response even from us CFC`s sworn enemies, we named our station after him, light cyno`s and threw 10 bil isk Vndi`s at UMI undock in his honor. Deep down Eve players dont want to cause RL pain I dont think.
Thats why they are so eager to cause virtual pain because of that.
Anyways I have unfortunately picked up the saying, and even when trying not to say it in the heat of battle, I will say "we need to exfil or we gonna be raped" etc etc and I know my hearts in the right place.
I agree its def not the best lingo but even in the Military we used Raped as a term when we would execute a perfect ambush or perfect entry.
Lastly on a completely diff note I always think that number is abnormally high. Out of all the girls I know and or friends/Co workers/Military [50 or more] 1/10 have had sexual acts done to them that crossed the line but ended up being non-Violent encounters, and more of a pressure to perform etc and out of the hundreds I know 3-5 were violently assaulted, 2 I had the luxury of "Escorting" to the authorities in the Military, after they tripped and fell on there way 10-15 times.
1/6 billion mil is 1 to many, but I do think its very highly inflated number, to add awareness to the issue. No excuse just wanted to point that out.
I just think it started as more of a joke between dudes in Eve as a means to say they were emasculated by that fight, like the Military Spec Forces term B.O.H.I.C.A

If I say in comms, "Lets kill these guys" I am not talking about actually removing a human life, killing a father, mother, son daughter, a living being, I'm talking about pixels and 1's and 0's in a computer game.
Why is the term "rape" worse than kill, destroy, loot their belongings, keep their corpse as a trophy.
IRL all these things are awful acts that are unforgivable, however, within the context of a game, they are just part of it.
At least with "Rape" there is no actual act within game that resembles the physical violation in real life.

I really appreciate this article. I am a female that has played EVE Online for almost 6 years now and I am also a victim of rape and sexual abuse. I also live in 0.0 and it is never fun to have someone throw out the word Rape casually. It is very serious and can really mess a person up bad. 1 in 3 women is indeed a correct statistic. Chances are you know someone who has been raped, they may not have told you but I would be very surprised if everyone of you didnt know at least one person who has been raped. Thank you for bringing this issue to light.

As in all things Eve you can get easily sidetracked from one thing to the next. Like when President Bush used to say that hunting down Saddam Hussein was in fact 'Regime Change' as if murdering someone was less offensive if you termed it with a new type of phrase. Just because Eve is a game does not make it a place where real life terms are less offensive. Eve is played most of the time by real life people. I doubt a woman in the entire Eve history has ever said on comms or in chat that they 'raped them' or that a 'rape train' is heading out. So men, man up admit you are wrong and be good Eve citizens or I will hunt you down in my Ham Drake slowly watching you run out of cap boosters for your ASB LOL fit ship and the spray of snowflakes because my 7th hi slot is festive in nature.
When CCP themselves make a video that includes a rape joke, good luck convincing the player base to stop using it. Also, whenever I read your stuff, you always come across as a fag. Please stop, it offends me.
Rape is a power crime, not a sexual crime. It's a common public misconception. In games when the term rape is used it's also used as a reference to overpowering an opponent. It doesn't make it better, but it helps draws the line between it.
