Hi everybody,

Today I'm going to talk about how to fly safely in Retribution! We are adding a couple of new features to ensure that, when you inevitably lose your ship in a very silly way, it is very definitely 100% your fault.

SAFE LOGOFF

This system is pretty straightforward: if you are not doing anything dangerous, you can now opt to "Log Off Safely". This will give you a big on-screen timer showing you how long until you log out. When the timer runs out, your ship is immediately removed from space and you're informed that you successfully logged out.

You will also notice here that there is a button marked "Abort". If, while you're in the process of logging off, you see some dastardly pirate slash noble upholder of justice delete as appropriate flying over to end your ship's meagre existence, you can abort the process and defend yourself. This should ensure that you'll never (again) die because you logged out a minute too soon and got podded while the client was closed.

You cannot be safely logging off while:

  • You have active modules
  • You're ejecting from a ship
  • You have aggression from players or NPCs
  • Your ship is exploding or self-destructing
  • You're issuing movement commands
  • You're launching or jettisoning objects
  • You're joining a fleet
  • You're deploying or reconnecting with drones
  • You have a target lock or are targeted
  • You're warping
  • You're decloaking or under gate cloak

You can't initiate a safe logoff while any of these things are happening, and if they happen once the countdown is running, it'll be aborted.

SAFETY SYSTEM

The Safety System is sliiightly more complex. Masterplan explained in an earlier blog that, in Retribution, there will be two levels of illegal behavior: "suspect" and "criminal". The safety system ensures that you cannot commit illegal behavior without deliberately switching off your safeties first.

Your new safety system has three states: enabled, partially disabled and disabled.

  • While ENABLED, you cannot commit any kind of illegal act
  • While PARTIALLY DISABLED, you can commit acts that will get you a suspect flag, but not those that would get you a criminal flag
  • While DISABLED, you can do anything you like, up to and including criminal acts

Your safety settings can be adjusted using this cunning new button on your HUD:

Clicking the little round button brings up the safety settings options, where you can select your desired state. Going UP the list (ie, moving to a less-safe setting) requires confirmation; going DOWN the list does not.

Changing your safety setting happens instantly, but moving to a safer setting will not clear flags that you've already incurred.

If you try to attempt an action that's prevented by your safety level, you will simply not be allowed to do it (this is enforced both on the client and on the server). These commands are all highlighted in the UI – in red or yellow, depending on their severity – and if you try to click one of them, the safety button will blink to remind you where you need to change your settings.

The upshot of all this is that you can never just do something illegal by accident: you always have to deliberately go and disable your safety settings first. On the other hand, if you're out to cause trouble, you'll never be bothered by last-minute pop-ups again: if you're on a lowsec roam and you turn your safeties off, you're in full free-fire mode from that point forward. And, pilot beware, if you fully disable your safeties in hisec then you're just one button-press away from a visit from CONCORD. Use at your own discretion

This is not coming soon; it's already in the game if you have an aggression timer with another player in empire space. And I'll be damned but my rifter is still a rifter, and not a pony, even with such a dumbed-down game mechanic.

The feature is actually quite nice. The idea is retention. How many new guys leave eve because of an early mistake? This allows them to gradually move into more hostile game play. A solid addition to a new guys eve education.

  11. Idk I kind of like the idea or turning the ships safety protocols on an off. Lets face it. In the Military they don't just let tanks roll around free to shoot with wanton disregard… unless someone gives them permission to fire. It's just giving you more control of your ship, and a handy little button to turn off all the stupid warnings when you try to jump to low sec or shoot a POS.

You're totally right, I propose that you must enter a 64-bit encryption key which changes every 5 minutes based on the sum of two random prime numbers every time you want to undock. Eve is supposed to be complicated and I won't have accessibility or user friendliness in my spaceships game.

the thing that annoys me about games like EVE is the morons who start complaining when game functionality is added to help new players. LOOK WHAT IT SAYS! IF YOU ARE SO AMAZING AT THE GAME, TURN IT THE F*CK OFF!!!!

I've not had any such problem since i've been playing but i can see it being helpful for people who havent played for a long time. Dont come across as an elitist f*ckhead when something that will actually not effect you in the slightest is introduced.

In the end, if things like this arent introduced over time, the elitist pricks are the only people who'll be left in the game. And the game will die. If thats what you want, keep crying about it. Otherwise shut the hell up.

CCP doesn't realize that they screwed up with making things expensive ingame adding all of these new features is not going to help……this is not world of Warcraft we play eve for its difficulty to exist in the game they don't plan ahead before they change features (drone region mechanics) everyday I less and less players on the opening page player count it use to be at 50000 now it sits around 34k consistently. Back when it would peak it would be 60 k and now it peaks at 40. Sry to say its going to go down again people that play eve usually aren't millionaires and those who are play when their not traveling the world. Sad times are ahead for the eve community but dust might save eve as a source of recognition of doing something no one has done before. But we do not need WOW features in eve the game would lose its active player base have a spike of fad players which will drop quickly due to costs of assets. Preserving ships longer in space is not a way to make costs sensible to eve players do something to fix this CCP

What the fuck CCP we are mature enough to deal with out shit (most of us). And those who are not, well… fuck them, dont make the game easier because people are stupid. Eve is not supposed to be easy, maybe it shouldn't be god-awful but holding their hand and making absolute sure they cant fuck up is really dumb.

Don't drop life-rafts to the stupid or those unwilling to learn.

Its not like they can use it to log off cloaked or something.
In fact if you check that mechanic again you will see that it will make it easier to get those AFK-stealth campers since they will need to stay uncloaked for 1 minute until they log off and give you time to scan them (like now, more or less).
Don't look at every change as a bad thing, just think about how you can use to your own advantage and if you and your friends are unable to do so then please stop by Jita or any other trade hub to give you your banana.

Retribution is a direct result of CCP listening to players – to those that quit the game already, that don't stay after the trial or just speak out against bad design decisions that are in the game for way too long.
Saying CCP waste their time with changes like this is shortsighted.

Definately win / win here, make it harder to harass new players while not affecting experienced players. I don't see any downsides here but a potential for more new recruits sticking around longer. The last thing we need in Eve are more reasons for new players to leave.

Well i like to grief those people, why should my play style suffer?

The idiots can go on being idiots 99% of the time and still be safe in highsec. Currently if you're not willing to learn the basic mechanics of eve you will eventually learn the hard way but if CCP aren't careful people will sit in the safety and miss out on arguably Eve's greatest feature – PVP.

I accept that PVP isn't for everyone but a lot of new players are scared of leaving highsec and this is contributing to the lack of targets both PVPers and miner/mission runners taking the risk/reward in both low and nullsec.

I rage quit twice due to wardec and griefers while carebearing in my first year of eve. It was only once I decided I'd had enough that I started learning how to fight back.

My first kill was ganging up on a HS griefer to defend the little mining corp we had built up of 15 or so less that 1 year old players over a few months – If that hadn't come to pass I would've got bored and unsubbed many years ago.

Instead I discovered a gamqe I truly fell in love with and I have never looked back since…

    1. This is not an alt

Surely then the issue is not with game mechanics changing which, long term a good thing, but more corporations who specialize in PVP to take in and recruit and nurture new comers?

And I love this feature, many a time I have lost ships in hisec shooting badgers and forgetting its not 0.0 lol

hint: troll/pirate logic does not apply to RL. most newbies simply quit if they get griefed. if u want more pvpers, show newbies the pvp training corps.

      1. Binzii

That's not going to help the newbies who sit in highsec mining corps grinding for next months plex because they're (wrongly) convinced they need a battleship and 20million skill points to enjoy PVP. You have to experience the rush to fall in love with it.

Speaking from experience forcing people out of there comfort zones exposes them to new experiences and elements within the game. As far as 'getting some good PVP' making more people fight will lead to more PVP experienced pilots and more experience leads to gudfitez.

If you disagree you aught to actually try some non-blob pvping first.

Alienating long time customers in hopes of new customers isn't a sound strategy. Particularly in a game where so many people have so many alt accounts. How many new subscribers do you need to get to fill the void left by one old timer with 4-10 accounts leaving.
