Excessive exposure to magic and chainmail bikinis along the way led to a fascination with unusual topics that cloning technology just couldn’t cure. The Nosy Gamer an obligatory read for every serious Eve Online aficionado.

The Nosy Gamer: Goonswarm = CIA

I originally intended to ignore the latest claims by Glenn Beck that Goonswarm is a node in the CIA’s communications network but I have to get this out of my system.  Glenn Beck is a professional conspiracy theorist.  Some people think it is an act; I don’t believe so.  He naturally comes up and believes in conspiracy theories and has turned that talent into a paying career.  And he is a non-partisan conspiracy theorist.  I believe his advice to buy gold came during the Bush 43 administration.

One thing about conspiracy theories is that they do not have to be 100% accurate in all details in order for the conspiracy theorist to get credit for uncovering a hidden truth.  Which is good for Mr. Beck since as far as I can tell everything he said about Sean “Vile Rat” Smith was utter b***s***.  Please tell me if I got something wrong…

1.  Sean was IT support, not security, not an agent looking for missing U.S. weapons.

2.  Sean served six years in the Air Force before joining the State Department.  Last I heard, becoming a Navy SEAL requires being in the Navy.  The Air Force has their own special operations units.

3.  Sean talking to friends via Jabber is totally believable.   If one is in a location where going out at night is dangerous, saying in and talking to the folks back home if the option is available is a natural and understandable activity.

4.  The story about Sean posting to a gaming website originated on The Mittani’s website.  Here is the actual quote reported.

(12:54:09 PM) vile_rat: assuming we don’t die tonight. We saw one of our ‘police’ that guard the compound taking pictures

That quote, I believe, came from Jabber logs.  Unless Sean posted on internal Goonswarm forums that I do not have access to or on the Something Awful forums (not a gaming website) then Mr. Beck misrepresented the source and the contents of the quote.

Now, let me make a comment about why conspiracy theories originate and become popular.  Most of them arise when government attempts to hide something and does so badly.  Notice that Mr. Beck did not offer his theory until after UN Ambassador Susan Rice made her rounds of the Sunday morning talk shows on 16 September flat out stating that there was no evidence that the assault on the consulate and the murders of Ambassador Stevens, Sean Smith and two former Navy SEALs.  Instead, the events of 9/11/12 occurred because people were upset with a film trailer that was posted on YouTube in June.  Really?  I was writing about possible links to al-Qaeda on 13 September and The Nosy Gamer is a gaming blog.  In fact, the Obama administration repudiated the story Ambassdor Rice peddled to the public a few days later, with White House press secretary Jay Carney stating, “It is self-evident that what happened in Benghazi was a
terrorist attack.”

Instead of coming out and saying the matter was still under investigation, the Obama administration tried to feed the American public an alternative version of reality designed to help his re-election chances.  One of the requirements for modern conspiracy theories is that the government is doing something it does not want the public to know about.  Handing out a story that is unbelievable after someone does a couple of Google searches will draw conspiracy theorists like a moth to a flame.  Or to put the sentiment less politely, b***s*** tends to breed more b***s***.

Now, for those who think that Mr. Beck will shut up now that Goons have swarmed to his website and pointed out his factual errors, don’t hold your breaths.  Yesterday Mr. Beck received some validation for his theories from, of all places, the New York Times.

“The attack in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans has dealt the Central Intelligence Agency a major setback in its intelligence-gathering efforts at a time of increasing instability in the North African nation.

“Among the more than two dozen American personnel evacuated from the city after the assault on the American mission and a nearby annex were about a dozen C.I.A. operatives and contractors, who played a crucial role in conducting surveillance and collecting information on an array of armed militant groups in and around the city.”

“American intelligence operatives also assisted State Department contractors and Libyan officials in tracking shoulder-fired missiles taken from the former arsenals of the former Libyan Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s forces; they aided in efforts to secure Libya’s chemical weapons stockpiles; and they helped train Libya’s new intelligence service, officials said. “

Mr. Beck’s main point in his conspiracy theory is that Ambassador Stevens was in Benghazi in order to help track down U.S. weapons before they fell into possibly unfriendly hands.  The New York Times is now reporting that the consulate was performing exactly that function.  Mr. Beck’s story now goes from bats*** crazy to plausible, although requiring a lot of incompetence.  Conspiracy theorists don’t need to have all their facts correct if significant potions of their theories are proved true.  They will receive credit and acclaim even if some of the actors are portrayed incorrectly and family and friends of those involved are hurt in the process.

I read that the SEALs were not actually assigned to protect the ambassador. They were good men and took up arms either way but the security detachment at the embassy was non-existent.

Goonswarm = CIA is not what that guy said in his show either.

Its not exactly new for Intelligence Agencies to use Online Games and affiliated media to communicate. though that doesn't make other people who take part in such forum part of the CIA at all.

Listen to the Glen Beck video in the link @ 10:25 and you will see that Mr. Beck was implying that Sean Smith (RIP) was communicating with the CIA when he was chatting on Goon's jabber. Mr. Beck was saying do you really think that a Navy seal is going to be chatting on a game site when they are under attack. He was imply Sean Smith (RIP) was calling out for help in code.

It is possible to transfer from the air force to the navy for the purposes of attempting to enter the SEAL candidacy program. However, if he was still in the air force, or served the entirety of his military career in the air force, it's highly unlikely that he was in the navy seals.

The story I heard from several contacts in gsf is that Sean was required to stay behind after the initial evacuation because he had to dismantle/destroy cryptology equipment that was in use at the embassy. Now, given that information, if it's accurate, it's very likely Sean was a contractor for either the CIA or NSA.

I can confirm that cryptogrpahic equipment in danger of being compromised is to be destroyed in order to prevent the classified codes and equipment from falling into hostile hands. This is not NSA/CIA policy, but the policy of every US gov't agency that uses such equipment, including the military, civilian intelligence services, and Dep't of State. In short, it doesn't indicate anything except that Sean was trained to use such equipment.

None of this would be an issue if the White House had given those folks proper protection. There was ample demonstration that this was needed amongst which were previous attacks on the embassy. As was the case with the previous ludicrous deflections that this was just local anger at a movie, UN Ambassador Susan Rice also desperately tried to dismiss the very valid claims of neglect of these individuals. Prior to their deaths, there were warnings after warnings of the potential dangers but nothing was ever done. Now the White House says anything to sweep this under the rug and get itself re-elected.

Don't be dumb! Property does not empower you to make your own laws. A web site owner does not stand above the law. You can sue forum owners for publishing offensive or illegal content, but you can sue them for violating the freedom of speech, which is an international human right, just the same. It works both ways.

Most of the time is it the former that causes administrators to censor comments and most people do not care enough for the later to sue owners. As a result do we get a lot of silly censoring on the Internet, which is caused by scared owners who are being afraid of law suits, to fascist administrators who are not more than untrained and cheap labourer doing a terrible job. In the end does it still work out, because a web site that censors too much loses credit and people stop reading it.

Just don't believe property gives you special rights or that it allows you create your own laws. It is the opposite and you are more likely to be held responsible for the property that you own. People who think property empowers end up on remote farms with guns in their hands and hoisting their own flags.

You should learn more about it. If you like it or not, but Riverini will also only act upon the human rights. If for example a comment insults a dead person then the relatives can see it as a violation of their dignity. One of the human rights then is to protect a person's dignity and it stands above the right to freedom of speech. As such are "hate speeches" often not allowed and people falsely claim their right to freedom of speech. There are many human rights and one you might be interested in is the right to education!

Freeom of speech in the United States is derived from the US Constitution, which states..

            "Congress shall make no law…"

Is riverini in congress? God help us all..

          20. Freedom of speech is an international human right? Are you out of your freakin' mind? Have you ever left your home town? Freedom of speech is an AMERICAN right. Go to a communist country, or an islamic country, or a country with a warlord in power, or a dictator, and by all means, practice your international human right of freedom of speech. If you survive, please, come back and share with us your life-changing experience.

what are you on about dude, thats what im saying…. clearly the admins of this site have an agenda, clearly they want to filter the kinds of things they want people to read here…

its fine, as you said its their site, and thats why im saying i wish someone made an alternative one with genuine news, objectively edited and summarised and with a more liberal approach to discussions, when a 'NEWS site' claims to be impartial and subject orientated people normaly expect it to publish the views of all interested parties, i expect more from sites like this one thats why i simply pointed out that an alternative would also fin readers and we need one, now.

also in response to john douche and the other guy…

Human rights were defined and agreed to by Geneva convention and is a part of the foundations of the European Union as well as US constitution.

Now, I'm not going to research and cite anything but i'm pretty sure that the practical implication of the freedom of speech 'laws' is that the state cannot prosecute and harass people who simply manifest unpopular opinions in a peaceful manner.

Barack recently said in his speech about that clip which some muslims went all crazy about and people died over – a person can say horrible things about me and i will always defend their right to do so… And i agree with that and it goes to show you what Freedom of Speech idea is supposed to look like.

It is often being slightly suppressed and the reason given for it is "terrorism" the great reason that all of the sudden after CIAs fundraiser of 9/11 is being used to justify anything that would otherwise be against the American Dream (Ideal)

point is- the freedom of speech does not apply to censorship, not even in press, HOWEVER, when that press goes to length to convince the public that its impartial, free and practices the freedom of speech to a great extent and so on… then it is in the public interest to make sure that what they are doing is not false advertising and misrepresentation or an active assault on the constitutional liberties

            **************** main point *******************
Lets not loose focus… original importent point is that WE NEED A NEEW EVE NEWS WEBSITE a more liberal, impartial, free ONE not in favor of western or American politics, not funded (officialy) by PL or Goons or whoever,

after reading 20+ articles i think anyone with brains will realise that a propaganda is being practised here

So you don't think there is anything at all that should be censored here? What if there were a another site. Do you think it should allow anyone to say anything that they wish to be said regardless of how hurtful, disrespectful and inconsiderate it may be?

If he was working at an embassy, then it is entirely likely that he was working for CIA as they supply majority of staff to US diplomatic missions. That is not to say that he was on some kind of Indiana Jones-style weapon hunt. A lot of people in US have got a sexed up view on what CIA actually does and people like Glenn Beck exploit that to make money, just like other "conspiracy authors" exploit their gullibility or poor understanding of science.

One of the very few corpses of his in the history of Eve. The man has only lost 44 ships and I can only assume fewer pods. Then again he only has 577 kills. How can so many people follow a guy that has no clue how to even play the game.

The same way people follow other leaders such as presidents, cult leaders, managers. Sometimes those people know shit. but do know how to create a following

He knows how to create a following no doubt. But how can so many follow him in a video game. If your alliance ceo doesn't know shit about the game and has no desire to even learn it, other than metagaming, what chance do you have to ever learn anything?

In any game I play I always want to be as good at it as possible. I don't take advice and direction from people that don't play.

I understand the point of your comment but it's nothing I already didn't know.

I think you are missing the central point Jon. He is, for whatever reason, inspirational to some people. The President/leader of a country rarely knows one end of a rifle from the other yet he is the leader of his countries armed forces(directly or indirectly, don't get into semantics with me here.) Mittens leads, and because most people want to be lead, he will find a niche.

No, you are wrong. As I said before I get the point. I must also say that comparing people in this game to presidents and such is ludicrous.

I'm convinced that this game caters way too much to the lazy gamer. The person that wants to achieve things with as little effort as possible and this is what mittens and montolio give them.

Please don't get bogged down by the ramblings of another corporate media whore like Beck. The truth is we don't know what happened this Sept. 12 relying only on news media reports. What we do know is that Western powers will use this event to further highlight the "threat" of terrorism and justify the ludicrous measures they've been taking against it i.e. speech suppression, gun confiscation, detaining ppl without due process, TSA subjecting ppl to microwave radiation (body scanners) and feeling down your pants if you opt out. Wake up ppl – ignore the distraction that is the corporate media.

Well I like you optimism sir but Air Force personnel can be Navy Seals, in fact two of the members of seal team six, that so gallantly shot Osama in the face, are in fact in the Air Force. Air Force personnel that are Combat Controllers are often placed into units of other branches to provide air support and set up airfields in hostile territory. It is very possible that he could have been placed with a navy seal team if he was in an Air Force special forces job

To be entirely fair, having some limited knowledge of this subject, CIA/DIA/NSA personel, even those who aren't operators/operatives working under aliases, but work with those that do, are generally instructed to give a generic unexciting job description to those who might ask, generally this job description is spelled out in writing for them

It would not be odd at all for the aforementioned personnel to say, "I work in IT". It would be even more common for them not to tell their Eve Online friends anything other than "I work in IT".

Additionally, the CIA/DIA (who's names are often interchangeable by the media, and in state/defense department press releases), especially DIA, hires from or borrows from many different branches and agencies in the US govt. It is quite common for OSI personel from the Airforce, or formerly with the Airforce, to work for DIA, or to later get a job with the CIA. Also with the higher turnover rates throughout the last decade, you can't really throw a stone in Virginia without hitting an ex-navy seal or ex-SF working for an intelligence agency.

That being said…. ::Takes a Breath:: It's entirely plausible that Vile Rat was an IT guy working for the CIA making about 200-grand a year plugging cables into satellite dishes.

^.^ See how fun this gets. You can't really get at an answer because your not suppose.

Knowing this, would VR have chosen to die as young as he did and not get to be a father to his kids for very long? No… but…

If you're going to die and have no say in the matter, would you be satisfied knowing that your death causes a shitstorm of drama that upsets the presidential election and gets Glen Beck to start weaving you into his (sadly not) drug-addled theory of the universe in the role of a surreptitious CIA agent?

Sean would have found humor in that.
