CCP SoniClover posted yesterday in the forums a small announcement which went inadvertidly for many of us, despite the heavy implications of it:

Testing ASB adjustments on DualitySubscribe

Hi all! As mentioned in this thorough post by CCP Fozzie, we’re going to have Duality up and running for a few days to test some of the stuff we’re doing in the winter expansion.

One of those things are making adjustments to the Ancillary Shield Boosters. There is a version now on Duality with different stats, we would love for you guys to test them out with us to give us a better indication of whether these adjustments are the right one or not.

The adjustments are:

Reducing capacity in all four ASBs so they can now fit 7 normal ones (9 navy ones)
Upping the duration of X-Large ASB from 4 to 5 seconds
Adjusting the capacitor need of all four ASBs considerably

Again, we’re still in the process of figuring out the best way to adjust the ASBs, so don’t take the current stats as the final word on what will happen in the winter expansion. Hopefully this is just the first test of many with you guys.

Finally, there are a few other module adjustments we’re contemplating, but are not testing right now, so more module testing is likely in the future.

Thanks in advance,
CCP SoniClover on behalf of Team Super Friends

[ORIGINAL FORUM POST]

What’s an ABS some of you Callente and Amarian might ask? They are reffering of course to the Ancilliary Shield Boosters, those little wonders which boost your shield at the expense of a few Cap Booster Charges.

Kirith Kodachi has an excellent guide on how to use the ASB in its current iteration.

Some have mentioned how “overpowered” this mod was shown to be during the Alliance Tournament X, in fact some credit this lone module with ruining the ATX a bit.

They are called "Megavolcanos" and there are no active ones near Iceland Im afraid.

But if there was one, and it would explode (no they do not erupt, they literally explode) Iceland would more likely break into pieces and be covered in plasma within minutes. Everything on Iceland would be destroyed and all the people would die instantly.

I guess that is better than nothing, but they will not be blown into space.

I think these changes are alright except for the capacitor requirement. It is already using cap boosters why boost capacitor need. Also I'd change it from 9 to 10 navy cap boosters because I like round numbers but that is just me.

nobody said the cap requirement was going to be "boosted;" they only said it would be "adjusted"

Why not just limit the fitting to one per ship? Like with Damage Controls. At the moment in dual setup a Sleipnir can tank a lot of stuff regardless of capwar/ewar as once the ASB is out of charges,

the 2nd can be used (if there's enough shit on the feidl to overwhelm dual ASB running at the same thats a fuck load of alpha) while the first recharges,

limit it to one per ship and bingo, it becomes the all or nothing tank the ASB was originally introduced to be.

Hate to say it but they were just a tad OP. I vote for 'tweaks' rather than 'nerfbat' here, as they're a cool module and are indeed very, very close.

One thing that I think would help here might be a large margin of diminishing returns for multiple modules… code for that should already exist in game?

agreed. A higher stacking penalty would've been a nice touch instead of, say, the duration increase.

There is no stacking penalty for ASBs, because there isnt for Normal shield boosters, armor reps, armor RR, shield RR, etc.

My question is WHERE THE FUCK ARE THE ARMOUR SHIELD BOOSTERS?!?!?! the reactive armour hardener is crap
BTW: If CCP buffed the faction plates with the same HP bonuses as the T2 plates they would actually be usefull now too faction plates' less weight isno worth the price at all

Armor tanking suffers from speed AND agility penalties, while shield tanking suffers from only sig radius penalties.

Active armor tanking requires twice the number of repair modules to rep the same amount, is back-loaded, has obscenely long cycle times, and the only benefit is slightly lower cap usage (which is already absurdly high for the two races that armor tank).

Not only that. Amarr and Gallente have more hull than Caldari and Minmatar. This means armor tanking needs to be weaker than shield tanking. At least on paper, but the problem is that logistics do not rep hulls and so one never sees too many armor tankers. The concept is broken at the root and just keeps rotting the rest of whatever balance is left. You cannot fix it with giving armor logistics bonuses to hull repping, because nobody will want to care for armor+hull when they can have ships with good shields and forget about the rest. Shields recharge themselves and do not need to be repped to 100% every single time and logistics can skip the last rep cycle, while armor logistics needs to add one more when maybe only half the amount is needed to reach full 100%. It is a collection of little things that overall makes armor tanking less desirable and therefore impossible to balance against shield tanking.

While we are seeing Drakes and Hurricanes, Tengus and Lokis, Maelstroms and Rokhs, is the latest trend in armor tanking the Navy Apoc, because only faction ships now are able to compete with shield tanking. There is no more obvious sign of an imbalance than a complete absence of armor tankers on the field.

Hull tanking has never been considered a viable tanking strategy. Damage controls and reinforced bulkheads exist to buy some time to catch reps, warp off the field or make it through a gate. Hull repair mods exist so that players don't have to fly to a station to fix their burning ship. Anyone who lived out of a pos in a part of null or w space knows that it can be serious hassle to fly to a station every time they take structure damage.

I don't have any problems with mechanical differences in armor tanking vs shield, but there are serious imbalances in repair rate, ehp per mod, and penalties.

        2. Tbh though Armor does have a rather large passive ehp advantage at the BC/BS and capital level. That's how it should be, shields are easy to recharge but armor is harder to break. What with Minmatar being the premier race as far as pvp is concerned and them defaulting to EMP (a shields' hole and armors top resist) as well makes things pretty easy for the smart player.

yeah, the ASB should be changed. its too powerful. CCP…when making these new mods u obviously dont think how it effect the different race ships……i mean why would u give ships which dont require energy to fire their weapons a module which dont require capacitor to rep shield!!! fucking stupid. You just make the shield missile boats and some minmatar ships even more powerful.

also, coz of the mid slots, gallente which are supposed to armour ships are starting to shield tank…while amar ships dont get shit from the ASB. how balanced is that CCP? sigh

rather than nerfing the ASB pleeeaaase introduce a ancilory armor booster. it would give amar ships a boost, stop galllente shield tanking, and not piss of vet players who love the ASB……use ur brain CCP, if u have one

    1. Gallente, muck like Minmatar are meant to dual tank. Some ships shield some armor. Armor already has a huge passive advantage in lots of places and pretty much owns capitals too, and ancillary armor boosters would never work, as energy mass conversions would ruin the day. What you should be looking for is a better hardener-thingymajig to exploit the fact that now CCP are trying to make armor more passive oriented and shield more active without introducing a huge cap dependency for all shield ships.

I think limiting number of ancillary shield boosters to 1 per ship would have been much better solution.

The way you should think ancillary shield boosters is that how much shield you get from full 13 cycles and then compare that amount to buffer tank. Suddenly ancillary shield boosters aren't overpowered. In most of the ships they can deliver little bit more shield than you would get from LSE + core defense field extenders, but while doing so you have much less ehp protecting you from volley damage.
