CCP FoxFour hints us of the upcoming AI revamp. Original post here.

Brains! NOM NOM!

What are we doing:

Hey guys, CCP FoxFour from team Five 0 here with some news about NPC's and their brains. As it stands right now on Tranquility we have 3 classes of AI. The most common is the normal one you find on all mission rats, belt rats, and the like. Secondly, we have what we internally call Level One AI which is on sleeper and incursion NPC. The final AI is the one on Concord.

One of the nice advantages with the Level One AI is we can create different AI templates from it. This is why the sleepers and incursion NPC are so different. We are going to do the same thing again; creating a third template from the Level One AI. We will only be activating specific parts of the new AI for this third template and it will not change how much damage the NPC do, how much damage they take, or generally how strong they are.

So with that all in mind: We plan on applying the Level One AI, with a new custom template, to almost all NPC in the game. We will not be touching Concord, the current sleepers, or the current incursion NPC. Other than that, all the NPC in the belts, missions, complex, navies, pirate faction, empire faction, and any others I can find will get the newer Level One AI.

Why are we doing this:

There are plenty of reasons for doing this. Trying to bring everything up to date, to stop maintaining old code, to give us new options for what we can do in missions, to try and close some exploits, to attempt to make the PvE more engaging, and more.

How are we doing this:

We are going to do this with a lot of little baby steps and public testing. We have also taken steps to make sure that if come release time if we don't like where this is at we can easily revert it all and put it off for a release to try a difference approach.

Internally we started with just changing all of the Gallente and Guristas NPC. This allowed us to run missions for the Caldari and go up against the new AI.

After the first round of testing we made some tweaks to the attributes on the NPC, specifically making them hate drones less, and got some of our QA and Bug Hunters to hammer through missions. So far the feedback from this has been really good and we are confident with moving on to the next step.We are still working out the dates for it but at some point in the coming weeks we want to get these changes onto a test server and invite the community out to run some missions and provide feedback.

As I said earlier this is something we are doing very carefully so getting it into your hands as soon as possible is of high priority for us. We are just sorting out when we can get access to one of the test servers.

Edit: Turns our the changes got published to Duality recently. So if you get on Duality now you can see and test the changes. If you have any feedback please post it in this following thread

F.A.Q.

    Q) Will the NPC's switch targets now?
    A) Yes, yes they will.

    Q) Will the NPC's choose a targets of the same size, so npc frigates will first target player frigs.
    A) Yes, the NPC will try and pick targets matching their own size.

    Q) Will NPC's kill my drones?
    A) Yes, but they don't hate them nearly as much as sleepers. I ran 9 level 4 missions and lost 2 drones. It does mean you need to pay more attention though. We can adjust their hatred of drones though which is why we are asking for feedback when this hits a test server.

    Q) Will NPCs do any new ewar?
    A) No. Their actual weapons and effects will not be changing.

    Q) Does this change things like spawns or range activation?
    A) No. When the NPC decide to start hating you is still based on the individual mission.

    Q) Does this also cover DED sites, exploration sites, belt NPC, faction navies, and hauler NPC?
    A) Yes. It covers everything except CONCORD.

Final Words:

A short dev blog, but hopefully one that is clear and to the point. CCP Bettik and I look forward to discussing this with you more as we move forward.

p.s. I have reports that the police on Duality are shooting everyone in High Sec… and that when they do you get GCC. So yea, we have given everyone what they wanted: A less safe High Sec. ENJOY!

p.p.s. We are working on a fix for this, don't worry.

  • +1..

um, kewl. step in the right direction

  • Nerds Unite

*starts selling tin foil by the yard while a truck load of RMTers turn up to flame and troll and kick and scream and genrally have a bit of a tantrum about it all.

    should be delicious.

    • guest

      Metallic tears best tears.

    • Marcus_McTavish

How does this really harm botters?

If they use a carrier, they will loose some drones, potentially, but there isn't really much here that will hurt bots.

      • M1k3y

Now they cant have 1 tank ship and a bunch more DPS ships, they all have to have a tank.

And they have to deal with lost drones on subcaps as well

        • Goon since 07

They always have tank+dps ships, they fly drakes, Navy Ravens and golems. This is not going to change anything.

  • Nullsec Miner

Buh bye to afk perma tanking those belt spawns while mining with a single pimped out exhumer tank.

  • John Douche

More smartness against drones smells like another Gallente nerf, but it is just PvE anyway. As long as NPCs switch targets fast enough and then target intruders to complexes and missions should this be quite good fun.

  • Suzume

Very excellent – I have looked forward to this for some time.

It'd be nice if the miners could still reliably defend themselves with drones without having to dock up frequently for replacements. Often times the drones are a miner's only (or fastest) response to belt rats. Perhaps if mining ships got some bonus in this area or maybe even just extra drone capacity without extra bandwidth… I could see it helping keep them happy, yet still challenging them with rotating agro. No extra durability or anything so they still spend the same ISK / materials replacing popped drones. An extra, say 15m3 would be awesome. One extra medium and a light, or three extra lights. I don't see them being a deciding factor in any PVP engagements or making the barges somehow OP in any way…

  • http://gamingmod.blogspot.co.uk/ Versuvius Marii

This won't hurt the solo mission runners much, but I do believe lvl 5 missions just took a massive nerf…

    • John Douche

I don't think so. If they have done it right then we will see more high-sec players coming into low-sec to do L5s. When NPCs not only target the first ship but can target any ship will low-sec pirates have a bit more work on their hands and mission runners will not get too easily raped. This has been the biggest turn off for many players and this could change now.

      • BZD

The NPC's usually only switch to targets which attack them. If Pirates were to warp in i doubt the NPC's would switch fire, except one of the pirates has a low tank. If you dont believe me, then just go and fly an Incursion with lower DPS and a high tank you never get shoot at.

        • Sleepers

Sleepers, love to focus on new people warping into sites. go do a quiet c4 site then have a friend warp in and see who instantly gets all the agro.

    • Marcus_McTavish

You can run level 5's in a Proteus, Nighthawk or Tengu with a Passive tank.

You can run level 5's in a Dual XL ASB Vargur, and likely other battleships with similar setups.

      • what

        ASB got nerfed :)

  • joccob

One bummer with this change is that it'll make it harder to bring newbies into level 4's. We've made it a corp practice to help new characters in corp by taking them into 4's to teach them more about fleet flying and help then earn a little iskies.

  • random wanderings

    Might hurt lv 5's considerably.

At least all the setups that combined a passive tank ship with an alt in a logistics ship.

Or complex's like the Maze where a single damage nuke has to be tanked by a specially prepared target. If the missile switches to anyone else in group they would likely get instapopped.

  • DarthNefarius

\o/ been askingfor this for awhile :D __( the mission AI not the rogue doughnuteaters )

  • fuckccp

As of now i see botters running ravens navy issues, this will more hurt people that want to play in group like a tank ship and dps ship. This'll just ruin the fun

    • Gs ftw

I agree. Say bye bye to running 10/10 or 8/10. Your logistic is going to get instad. And botter dont do missions or Plexes in teams, so they wont be effected.

Agro control is something that was never part of eve and shot stay in Wow.

      • foolu often

wow has no aggro managment. at least not really.

      • minimee

BS when i was green more often or not i manage to get spawn aggro in Level4 when orbiting the Battleship with my Battlecruiser ….. back then getting aggro was bad … with the new code the new waves will probl. act more "responsible" and don't just lock on closest target first …

the bad thing i read between the lines is if you join a BS running L4 with a Cruiser your bound to get webbed since the smaller prefere smaller targets … Adapt improvise overcome.

  • Smiling Joe

I run a pimped Paladin anyways, and when corp mates want to join in and take half of my profits without cutting the time in half, i get irritated but remain quiet. So this will take care of that for me hopefully.

    • Cunt

      Lol what a faggot

  • Junko

This kills ninja salvaging and mission flipping. More metagame professions thrown under the bus.

    • GOOG

Oh noes now there be risk and screwing over noobs? Say it ain't so, cap'n.

    • it's me

If it's somewhat related to what sleepers do, NPCs won't switch randomly, but because of damage/reps done

    • Bob

Such a drama queen, save your *fabulous* posts for something else chum

    • foolu often

i say thats true. ccp is killing the sneaking mission salvagers.
so we will have to find a new way to do some ninja. ccp acvts like ecclestone in the formula1.
"so you found something to be good at and make profit? i change rules. try new one!"

i do not think that this is a good idea. they should overwork it again.

  • Pale Blue Dot

Domi pilot here, i'm not afraid, cry moar or adapt

  • -A- Fag

Good for vets, bad for noobs. With the impending missile nerf i.e. drakes, this will really help new players gain a footing in eve with making their first iskies missioning. It's good to know ccp are thinking of their "new player longevity". In fact, fuck it and make the whole of eve into 0.0 space. At least that way, no more noobs will last the first month trial and all of us "oldies" can spend hours at a time whittling each others shields/armour down in shit ships that do fuck all damage. Where did i put that hulk….?

    • Lugalbandak

READ PLEASE , lvl1 wont be touched , so noob friendly

  • -1

So, every plexer gang will have to run rr tengus just like every ratting wh gang? Yeah, this will certainly bring more variety to that side of the game.

  • http://www.answercustomer.com Juan Sanchez

When the NPC decide to start hating you is still based on the individual mission.

  • JUAN MIGUEL LEONE

no more 10/10 or 6/10 because logistic will be shot by the switching target NPC???? CCP WHY ARE YOU SOO GOOD AT MAKING FROM GOOD TO HORRIBLE

  • watching

Changes is already on tranquility. Sat and matche it my self keeping my noctis alive after pve ship had allagro. Angel space.

  • Lugalbandak

and test and goons etc etc , yeah yeah , eve is a noob game….
