Editorial: Class Act.
After sleeping over it, I have to publicly condemn DaBigRedBoat opportunism on GSF jabber. In an effort which appeared to attempt to capitalize on yesterday’s tragedy:
(9:35:03 PM) firstname.lastname@example.org/directorbot: Attn: Elo Knight of black legion and Super twinkey of Nc.DOT have decided to be bitches of the highest order. They used last night, time we all spent grieving and :smith:ing over vilerat to shoot our structures and taunt us in local. Tonight IRC has called a level 4 cta, the highest possible and nc.dot and elo are telling their people they must show up. They think we will be too busy crying and sad to fight them and they are trying to abuse our friends death
SHOW UP TONIGHT IN A SUBCAPITAL, SLOWCAT, SUPER CAPITAL, IBIS. Show these fucking bitches that its not cool to use vilerat’s surprising death as a strategic objective and goal.
Subcaps are forming at 0300eve, we will be using drakes, tengus, tornados or other ships I call for. Be in umi with multipul ships. See you tonight.

Fidelas Constans forwarded the message to all members with the same purpose:
That’s right ladies and gents. In the time of sorrow and rememberance we have been takin advantage of. Time for us to show up in force: in brute, unforgiving, face smashing force! Lets show these dogs we do not let things like this go unpunished.
NCDOT Vince Draken issued the following informal response:
I am ACTUALLY….. speechless right now after reading this ping, Boat you are a [insults redacted] and you don’t even deserve to use Viles name like you have the man was a Legend and a fucking asset to Eve Online.
[more open insults redacted]
Vile Rat – NC. Salute you and RIP my friend. We also renamed H-W and our new staging system in his memory he will be missed
And while an explanation came after other players started condemning, one would have expected a bit more of good sense upon hearing idiotic rumors or the ramblings of a single player in local chat. I haven’t seen a more disgusting effort in capitalizing out of other people’s misfortunes. I understand that EVE Online is more than a game for many people out there, but the next time someone hears rumors – one would expect to have at least a bit of common sense before playing a blame game on others.
Same goes to the opponents and even victims of GoonSwarm Federation and allies mischief in game, do not take this as an opportunity to “get back at them” – as some already have and I also condemn them.
Nobody wins anything out of this behavior.
Also others have highlighted GoonSwarm Federation history of actually mocking on other player’s tragedies – this doesn’t give anyone carte blanch open the troll-gates on the GoonSwarm Federation grief, nor I am endorsing their past history of doing it on other players.
Court House issued a Jabber Ping regarding which should serve as closure for this slip:
(4:11:06 PM) email@example.com/directorbot: For the last several years Goonswarm’s done a very good job of villainizing our opponents. We’ve taken great license with the things they tell their people and more than a few times went ahead and finished sentences for them with our own spin on them. We’re guilty of dancing on the graves of more than one fellow EVE player over the years and I can think of a few gamers whose real lives have been mocked by us in unsubtle ways. What I’m saying is that we’re not innocent.
I’d ask us to stay above it all, but that sounds hypocritical, knowing our history. What I’m asking instead is that you not be trolled into rageposting. DBRB saw something that supertwinkey said and responded in a way that was consistent with our history but in bad taste regardless. This event can be a lesson for us in compassion and humanity or an exercise in hypocracy and goonsay.
I’ve had a productive chat with Vince and both of us are deeply impacted by Vile Rat’s murder. Moreso, we’re angry about the words that our FCs are using towards the “other side.” I’ll remind you all again that Vile Rat was always the champion of the better parts of human nature. Perhaps we can step back and separate our grief from our metagame for a bit.

While many of us never knew Sean Smith (Vile Rat in game), I believe no-one can argue that his tragic passing has not been felt throughout all New Eden. Other players have been quite noble on their efforts to honor this man, which I praise profoundly.
And before any other ignorant comments can be made out of this, please take the time to read a bit and meditate.
