Amidst the thousand-man battles of late, it is easy to forget the excitement of small NPC warfare. More than anything else, PoSes in NPC space say a lot about who actually holds influence over a solar system. Our battle-reporter bring is a first-person BR of Polaris Syndicate and their adventures in the Great Wildlands. What I really enjoyed was the sense of wonder this piece transmitted me – even from such a menial task as defending a PoS. More than a report or news-piece, this a light-hearted reading which evokes one’s first forays into null-sec warfare.
The Great Wildlands – Mecca of NPC SOV Warfare.
Great Wildlands. The Wild West of EVE Online. NPC sove with barely any stations. Logistic corner-point to many Dronelanderers. Smallgang warfare haven. Thats Where the Polaris Syndicate decided to go for a campaign. Away from the blob-fights in north. On our week of moving in, we realize, that we are not fighting the enemy we thought we are, but a french alliance of Ares Protectiva.
They decided to reinforce our staging PoS in N-DQ0D. We set the timer so it were to come out on any of our time zones, which guaranteed a fight. On paper ARISE is roughly twice the size of us, our numbers haven’t been tidi either, when ARISE’s RF fleet came in, we couldn’t fleet up.
Order of battle
On the day of the fight I gather round thirty-five brave duders to save our PoS. We decide to form up on another PoS knowingly it would gives enemy scouts a clear vision of our fleet. Still, we could not risk to be camped inside a station. Once our scouts reported the enemy being next door, we get our fleet to roughly 60km of gate in Abaddons. Enemy is reported to be in armor battleships; Armageddons/Megathrons/Tempest and even few Abaddons, a fifty-man strong fleet. They however decide to not jump in on range of us, but instead get back to their staging-system for a ride via Titan bridge. Their cyno warps on top of us and lights up. To our luck, it was a heron, which we killed it before everyone was thru it. Giving us a slight edge from the get go.
We were keeping our group tight in formation and keeping ourselves moving all the time. Another Cyno went up as we engaged and the ARISE brought four or five triage-carriers on field to counter one we decided to risk into the battle. The Carrier reps far out matched our DPS, so we instead relied on high Alpha target calling which worked far better.
Scaling things up a Notch
For some reason they were unable to kill many of us. Our carrier was indeed called primary it entered Triage. At that point we decided to take a Moros on field, even it was a full suicide to the Moros. The dreadnaught sieged on contact and started taking pot-shoots at the ARISE battleships. Doing decent damage to slow and big battleships who were triple-webbed we finally could break their tanks. The triage carrier went down and we relied to armor logistics for repairs. ARISE found trouble trying to kill the Moros as well, as our guardian group kept it repped and capped in between sieges. At that point the enemy decides to bring some big birds.
A new Cyno lights up and 4 supercarriers enter the fight. The Moros was short work after that. After the Moros was dead, the Supers were recapped and jumped out. Fighting continued for 20-ish minutes still, but neither one is able to break other teams tanks. We are kind of stuck. We had killed all the enemies small tackle and bubbles, so they could not hold us down anymore, but we had no interest to hold them down either, as we could not kill them anymore.
At this point our scouts report of a DarkSide. Tier3 BC gang in neighbor system. Both the enemy and us warp away fearing its a reinforcement to the opposite side. On warp-outs both sides still loose few ships, so DarkSide. got only two or three kills.
At the end of the day, Polaris Syndicate lost the ever important isk-war by loosing two capital ships. It won the strategic objective as during the fight, carriers were repping the pos at all the time. a PoS was saved, ships were exploded, fun was had.
Huge respect to the french of having the balls to field capitals and supers like they did. Huge respect of taking a fight without taking huge blue-balls. We will meet again on battlefield. Huge respect to all the pilots, who fearlessly reshipped after being popped just to get back to fight asap.
