The much awaited official address for the CCP Fearless leaked Newsletter has been posted, you can read the original here..

Dear concerned citizens of New Eden

This week has seen quite a controversy unfold. In almost the same instant as we deployed Incarna – which by the way is one of our more smooth and successful expansions, not to mention absolutely gorgeous – an internal newsletter with rather controversial topics addressed leaked out. To further compound the confusion there was a clear and rather large gap in virtual goods pricing expectation and reality with a large segment of the community. I‘m going to address both these issues right here.

Fearless

Fearless is one of our company values. It‘s also the name of an internal newsletter that has been designed and developed specifically to catalyze discussions on controversial topics. One of the biggest elephants in the room these days, not just for EVE but for the gaming industry as a whole, is virtual goods sales and microtransactions.

Therefore we dedicated an entire issue to exactly that topic. It‘s worth mentioning that the topic of the issue was “Greed is good?” as a way to ask a question that would then be debated back and forth and often exaggerated purposefully to draw contrasts and make points. The result of that is now widely available on the internet.

The opinions and views expressed in Fearless are just that; opinions and views. They are not CCP policy nor are they a reliable source of CCP views as a company. The employees who submitted articles to that newsletter did exactly what they were asked to do, write about theories and opinions from an exaggerated stand.

While it‘s perfectly fine to disagree and attack CCP over policies or actions we take, we think it‘s not cool how individuals that work here have been called out and dragged through the mud due to something they wrote in the internal company newsletter. Seriously, these people were doing their jobs and do not deserve the hate and shitstorm being pointed at them.

Pricing structure

People have been shocked by the price range in the NeX store, but you should remember that we are talking about clothes. Look at the clothes you are currently wearing in real life. Do you have any specific brands? Did you choose it because it was better quality than a no-name brand? Assume for a short while that you are wearing a pair of $1,000 jeans from some exclusive Japanese boutique shop. Why would you want to wear a pair of $1,000 jeans when you can get perfectly similar jeans for under $50? What do other people think about you when they see you wearing them? For some you will look like the sad culmination of vainness while others will admire you and think you are the coolest thing since sliced bread. Whichever it is, it is clear that by wearing clothes you are expressing yourself and that the price is one of the many dimensions that clothes possess to do that in addition to style and fit. You don’t need to buy expensive clothes. In fact you don’t need to buy any clothes. Whatever you choose to do reflects what you are and what you want others to think you are.

We will gradually introduce items at other price points, definitely lower and probably higher than what‘s in the store today. We hope you enjoy them and are as passionate about them as you are of the current items that are for sale.

I hope I‘ve addressed your concerns and cleared up a lot of the issues you‘re having. We‘ll continue monitoring the forums and other communications channels and pick up and reply if there are concerns not covered by this blog.

Thanks,

Arnar Hrafn Gylfason

Senior Producer of EVE Online

TL;DR: Apparently the Eve Community “misinterpreted” CCP’s internal newsletter and took it out of context

I don’t really know what to say.

right from the so cursed pdf

btw i realised that i might be wrong in one regard:
the monocle is worthless and therefore unimportant to me but to other people vanity items can be seen just as content as pvp and trading, i guess expecting to get what gets developed in with your money ain't completly wrong in that regard

From my viewpoint its alright for the greater good, if dust shall see the light of day they need funding, if its from people buying vanity items im happy as its not me who pays

Well this is very very very interesting. I quit playing EvE a little while back becuase they never come out with new content. (content that i care about) i dont care about walking in stations I'm not out pvping all day to go take a virtual shite in a virtual captains qaurters) in some station. Let me get to the point when i quit my 3 accounts I got a letter from ccp saying if you have quit becuase of the new upcoming vanity items we assure you there will never be any items that are not vanity items example. ships gold ammo things that actaully effect game play. So months and months down the road I come back to the game and this leeks out. The stright up boldly lied to me in the e-mail. Now Its not that I'm shocked that some Corperation lied to me, but that is exactly what they have become some greed infested corporation that frankly is over paid. Look at league of legends a nice f2p game that actaully listens to their player base. They actaully put out a new champion every 2 weeks or so at the longest completly balancing out a champion and making his abilties yada yada. My point is if this were ccp making this champion 1 champ would take them what you guys think about a year? CCP doesnt listen to their player base, they are terribly slow putting out any new content no matter what it is. They never meet a deadline in all the years I have played eve patch day is a joke every patch day. When i sit back and look at all this I am sick If they would listen to the player base as a whole and put in game content they WE ACTAULLY WANT the would have the profit increase they are looking for instead of these microtransactions.WTF game does anyone know about that you pay a monthly subscription for plus microtransactions? and one last thing if they put stuff on that Vanity store that isnt vanity items So help them God they will have the biggest shit storm Imaginable all the players that have invested years into this game with real time training literally wiating 30-60 days for 1 new skill to have some lil kid (or adult for that matter ) pay 10$ for a skill here 20$ for a Battleship here and oh snap 200$ for a titan? Is this what you want really?

It is a piece of prose concocted to deflect, discredit, and marginalize. Who knew someone at CCP read a U.S. manual on political crises.

Why does a senior member of CCP's management feel like he has the authority to "scold" the naughty players for being mad as hell that they were told in PLAIN ENGLISH that there was no chance of microtransactions/virtual currency profiteering in Eve only to find out CCP is having an internal debate about MTs?

I have read the document, and several of these supposed victimized employees stated in equally PLAIN ENGLISH that MTs are a part of Dust 514 and World of Darkness, and they WILL be part of Eve. That doesn't sound like friendly brainstorming/internal conversation to me. I believe the memo also mentions that a symposium on MTs/virtual currency was held in Iceland recently.

The only reason the community didn't revolt when the specter of clothes, etc. was first raised was because we were assured by CCP that these would be vanity items only.

If you can read Arnar Hrafn Gylfason's comments and read the memo and not see that he is so full of shit his eyes are brown, then I can't help you.

Bottom line: CCP lied. CCP is lying. CCP will continue to lie.

Sorry, but I won't be paying both my acounts anymore, gonna switch to some game that once you pay it, you have WHOLE access to it, not this bullshit that CCP is making that is charge for playing the game and ALSO charging for extra content, you have to choose, or release the game on a F2P model or you charge Monthly for each account you have.
Write my words, they are taking what Valve did with TF2, adding a vanity shop and them going Fremium with Premium benefits!

Have you actually seen the state of the games industry now? Very soon there will be no game that offers 'Whole access' once you paid for it…
Most single player games are coming out with either sections that require online interaction (either with other players or via $downloaded$ content).
Most fps games are out with token single player modes. Hell, even Blizzard, the masters of the single player game, made SC2 practically require multiplayer, not to mention breaking the story into 3 separate games.
Face it, the future is subscription/microtransaction based gaming.

Im glad they failed so horribly wrong that most of it's player base has seen through it and rages on into the days to come.. with luck it will cause more frustration to the other games.. and we the consumer as a mass become fed up and mad enough to go back outside and back to the real world…at least until the gaming industry starts crying bankrupt over and over until they change…… re-reading that.. i feel like the gaming industry is nothing more then an abusive spouse.. time fer divorce…

when it comes to money you give an inch (vanity items) their going to take that mile… (power items) and considering their pricing.. the vanity not gonna sell well.. meaning they will have to put items that are power granting and consumable, as well as desirable effect items that arnt.. if they want to make real money off the system….. thats why the player base rages.. besides the pricing.. the entire Idea is nothing more then a game raping capitalistic assult on the Game. eve was a high class full body MMO.. now its no better then an average Broswer game, or a randomly named low budget asian mmo.. ( not trying to be racist.. jsut most low budget mmo's ive encounters come from that side of the globe)

So the official "apology" blog isn't an apology, it's a politely written way of asking people to stop rebelling and to justify the price of space pixel clothing. It's a piece of shit. I am NOT paying $35 for a pretend shirt, when I can go to my local Walmart and pick several awesome ones up – that I can wear in a real bar – in a sale.

    These prices are just… no.

It was very obvious, but the point of your whole comment seems to be that you have other things you'd rather spend your money on than digital shirts. They can justify their prices all they want, but if no one buys them they aren't going to make any money off them. If they ask people to stop wrecking the game just because they won't spend money on something that they don't need and no one is forcing them to get, then i think they are actually more justified than the idiot players that riot just because someone told them they could have a shirt for $35. Someone comes up to me on the street and says that, I just laugh and go back to what I was doing. I don't see why we can't do the same here.

Then again, we don't pay full price for a video game expecting to have said hypothetical person walk up and try to pry additional money from us, based on a system that was designed for Free-to-Play games.

          2. -A- Jarlexly

The point you are missing is, we (rebels) thinking that, CCP will implement the bonus items to that Noble Shop , like "%10 Bonus to Turret Damage" "%20 Bonus to Rate of Fire" ect ect, if they see people buying 80-90$ for a monocle, they can do the Bonused items and sell them to 100$, so when this happens it will not just effect the buyers, it will effect all of our game play too! Can you give a promise that they wont do this? Where is the end point of milking the players, if they see the profit they will try to suck all the money fromo the players. That why we are angry and that why we are enraging about it.

            June 27, 2011 at 7:36 am

Also foretelling Eve`s/CCP`s demise soon, at some point they turned from being against the "Corporate grain" with "Fresh edgy" ideas to being like everyone else and just wanting money and willing to trade game balance for that.

People can say whatever but Plex is RMT same thing, it just costs more.

Anyways I hope other Computer game companies make a new Eve so we can all swap over bring back the bitter vets and start fresh, except with Mechwarrior as Planet battles not FPS or both

They made a million and 1 mech warrior knock offs….My point was Microsoft has the most important thing ever had, the ability tp be in over 2k systems on the same server, not like wow where you are searching servers, or you had your "Home server"

Well the secrets out, sandbox theft active anything goes shit is popular and its to a point where eves Infrastructure cant handle its Applicant/Subscribers.

If I was MSft or some other big wig like Google Id get my feet wet in the whole sandbox/POD/Internet reality thing and steal it basically. CCP did the hard part, showing it works and is viable if they keep the peeps happy and there is not just money to be made using 1 game but incorporating all of them, FPS,Mech, Spaceship etc etc CCP cant achieve "the dream" IMO but someone bigger could, the problem is CCP was the little guy fighting the hosts of WOW`s, LOTR etc etc so this big company, would have to realize it wouldnt make money right off, it would be a long haul type investment and they couldnt screw over the Main player base by making more money, that is where CCP is turning into them, point is….

If Im gona get treated like an assholehere in Eve where I come to be an Asshole and be differant than the oteher MMORPG`s but dont get that treatment ill tade it in to a group who will do the same but make it lag free at least.

SANDBOX was unique beceause they turned away all the "Respawners" but if they gona treat us the sam,e then we gonna expect better loading times, less lag and way way more anti bot stuff…..Sorry to say but CCP is like the NC [no offense to NC] They are living off there rep of being cool underground "Small guys but acting just like corporate bigwig assholes.

We getting no cool underground sandbox with all the shitty sideeffects, this charging guys like Chribba/Others who made this game different is flat out bullshit

They went about this sooooo bad they have a full scale uprising and the best they can do is say hey RL jeans that are brand cost 300 dollars why not Eve? Its like they want us to be pissed.

        P.S
In RL us Real people also buy knock offs/fakes that cost dirt cheap and look and feel the same so guess what I want a Chinese fake/Knockoff Gucci Monocle like the ones sold in NYC on canal street for dirt cheap and if someone wants to point out "Hey thats not real" I`ll laugh and call them names because they take the Internet world way to serious.

Wow, this response floored me. Comparing an expensive pair of jeans to EVE? Granted there are designer items in RL that costs a bundle BUT there is quality to them too or at least something that makes them different, finer embroidery, super-thin durable material, breathable, diamonds, etc. Unless that monocle has more texture layers than the others OR finer details we are missing, I don't buy it. Hell, even the clothes don't have any special textures let alone the bugs that causes clipping.

CCP, this was a really bad timing and I hope you don't go the way of many other MMOs I've been on. Greed really does destroy MMOs. I thought CCP was sorta different.

CCP should have responded on day one. We are paying customers. Lets not forget that. We want value for our money. And everytime CCP made statements, released epic advertisement videos (turned out to be all rendered, including the E3 Dust trailer to some extend) and made a lot of promises. In the end it all comes down to CCP talking the talk, but failing to walking the walk. And the lastest expansion, which in my opinion is nothing more than a small update, reached the boiling point. And now the kettle has exploded. People dont have issues with the insane NEX prices. People have an issue with CCP failing to actually deliver on game content. Including by their own words 'iterate' over game content. Instead CCP is just focused on making more money while they still can. Get as many accounts as possible (lots of alts – but lets count them as individual subscribers), and make each each expansion only in a way so that it attracts new players (before they leave).

CCP is not the anti-christ here people. They are trying something new. If the idiots among us buy into it then CCP will give them what they want. Actions speak louder than words, if you buy anything off NeX then you are part of the problem. Blizzard didn't make another 25$ flying mount just on a whim, the Celestial Steed derp event told them that it would make them another fat pile of money.

If ten thousands monicles sell then CCP is going to know that people want this stuff, regardless of what is on the forums.

Did he just compare real clothing materials on real flesh & blood people to visual artwork generated by computer code??

Oh my, i wasn't aware physical resources had some the valueless properties which allow replication simply by file –> copy. Wow, why do we keep manufacturing more than the first model of anything. LOL.

    Bye bye credibility.

Im in the denim market, and most high end jeans out there are usually $200, $300 max. Arnar must really be loaded if he buys $1000 jeans!

Arnar should also realize the people who play Eve are probably not buying $1000 jeans. They are paying $15 a month for internet spaceships. If i wanted a $1000 a month MMO cash sink i would have went to Calypso. Things should be priced accordingly.

For the love of god, stop complaining about the prices! You don't want to pay $70 for a monocle, then don't buy a freaking monocle. If you don't want to pay $35 for a shirt, then don't buy a shirt. Just keep playing, ignore the NeX and stop saying shit about things that you'll never even try to buy. Who knows, if enough people don't buy things, maybe they'll actually lower the prices, you know, like supply and demand, whereas when the demand is low, prices go down?

They will do it, and suckers will pay for the advantages why? becuase EVE is all about copetition. Its a fully natural habitat where the fittest survive and the weak die. however in a virtual envirionmnet there is no renewable resource for the predators, the "herd" they feed on is finite and mobile, once they are abused enough they will move on and the predatory players will have no one to target except themselves.
CCP will use the revenue generated through NeX to fund development of Dust 514 and repeat the cycle for WoD…. I'm calling it right here and now thats exactly what's going to happen.
