An Explosive Players’ Reaction

Much has been said about the reaction to the Noble Exchange Shop [NeX] prices and, most importantly, the recent leaks of the CCP internal News letter; featured by EveNews24.com and mirrored by many other videogame news sites and forums. CCP had yet to address the leak directly after two days of mass protests and dozens of threads regarding the issue.

After almost two days of being silent, CCP Pann, an older CCP membe,r was sent to the forums to quench the wrath of the outspoken players apologizing and asking for a “parlay” with players:
Hi, everyone

Some of you who have been around for a while may remember me. I was the original community manager for EVE. These days, I oversee the PR and Community teams. While most of what I do happens behind the curtains, I am still aware of what’s going on front and center. I would be lying if I said that what’s happening now didn’t make me sad, but I’m not here to ask for your sympathy. To be perfectly honest, I’m here to buy time while we try to sort things out. No sense in lying about it so I’ll call a spade a spade.

It’s clear that many of you are angry . There’s a lot happening, things are changing quickly and we haven’t been as forthcoming as you were used to in the past. I’m willing to step out front and take a lot of heat for that since I was the one who made the decision to hold off on responding for a while to see if things cooled down once the new wore off.

I was wrong to do that and I apologize. We should have said something much sooner. We should have done more to address your concerns and be forthcoming, even if we weren’t going to be able to immediately give you all of the answers you were looking for or the answer your questions in ways that will instantly turn those frowns upside down. To be even more candid, I cannot answer all of your questions, either, but I am working with the people who can to start getting those answers for you. Again, I know we’re doing this past the expiration date of your patience but I hope you’ll bear with me.

I know that, with very few exceptions, most of you don’t know me from Adam. I haven’t earned your trust or respect; therefore I have no right to ask anything of you – but I am going to try, anyway. Can I please count on at least some of you to help bring the pitchforks and torches down a few notches?

Like I said, I won’t be able to answer all of your questions tonight, but I promise we’ll start getting some info out tomorrow. As I see it, the chief complaint is regarding the high cost of goods in the Noble Market. Second, many people are unhappy about the Captain’s Quarters. Third, there are some performance issues with Incarna. I would appreciate it if you would confirm my observations or tell me what I’m missing, but I do ask that you do it in a productive way. I will remove posts without prejudice if they are counterproductive to the conversation I hope to have with you.

If you’ve read this much, thanks for staying with me. If you have something to say, I’d like very much to hear it.

Humbly yours,
~P~
The backslash from the EVE community took an almost explosive nature, netting over +503,000 views and more than +5,500 responses mostly in an angry and expletive nature, regarding a perceived lack of trust and inability to explain the nature of the leaked document.

From the 185 pages (and counting) thread, a player took the time to highlight some bits which might be of interest to our general readership:
The newsletter was not fake. I guess this is how it feels when someone reads your diary, something you hadn’t intended anyone else to see. Not to deflect the heat but to explain why what I’m about to say, I wasn’t involved with writing it. The only reason I mention that is because I am not going to presume to know the minds of the people who did have comments in there. I am not going to throw people I love under the bus or to the lions or whatever. I can’t/won’t answer questions about what they said or why they said it.

Our newsletters are written as a means to bring about discussion (that sometimes can even become heated debate) among our coworkers. That’s really all I can say about it. I am not a game designer. I’m a mouthpiece. I’ll admit it. By the time I get involved, the decisions have been made. Not making excuses for myself, just explaining.

CCP Manifest promises an official response tomorrow

CCP Manifest insist that the current controversy lies in the NeX pricing rather than the leaked News letter

CCP Hands out forum and in-game Bans to offenders.

Some high profile players like Helicity Boson, known for organizing the Hulkaggedon events, and Liang Nuren have been banned from both the forums and in-game for their comments; some of which were extremely harsh in nature towards CCP employees and to the company as a whole.

CSM Seleene actively involved in the forum discussion.

While not associated to Eve News24 we would like to note that CSM delegate and Pandemic Legion member Seleene has been quite active in the CCP Pann’s thread, keeping it from derailing and maintaining a level of communication between players and at least him as a member of the Council of Stellar Management, we would like to congratulate him on his effort and invite other CSM delegates to take part of his example, which is what they were elected for.

CSM Chairman responds to the thread

The Mittani, the Chairman of the CSM expressed his views on the forum thread.

Jita in Fire – Mass player’s protest.

On the Eve Online forums, a player called for the first intentional Jita lock down in The Forge region as a protest. The action required piling as many players as possible in the game’s largest and most active trade hub (so large it has it’s own computer node for itself). The lock down has been active for over two hours now. Protests are also being organized via the ‘MASS-PROTEST’ in-game channel [**UPDATE** CHANNEL DOWN] and twitter hashtag.

The system has been locked down with between 1200 – 2000 players, and many more trying to jump in. It has been reported that most of the players have congregated at the Jita 4-4 station, some of which have resorted to shooting the Jita Memorial. The Perimeter system has been experiencing never before seen traffic as players who are trying to jump into Jita are ebing rerouted to Perimeter.

Chribba not part of the the protests in Amarr

We stand corrected in our past intel regarding Chribba’s participation on the protest, which was involuntary to say the least. Many players cheered in local as he undocked his famous Veldnaught and then promptly disconnected.

Inevitable “Downfall Video” released

Of course any protest isn’t complete without the obligatory version of the downfall video, so….. here you have it.

We would also like to congratulate the new alliance “Monocle Overlords” [MONO] for being the most epic alliance name since SOLODRAKBANSOLODRAKBANSOLODRAKBAN [LODRA].

We’ll keep reporting and updating as we get more info.

*UPDATE* CCP Releases a new Devblog

The much awaited official address for the CCP Fearless leaked Newsletter, this is part of their official response:

Therefore we dedicated an entire issue to exactly that topic. It‘s worth mentioning that the topic of the issue was “Greed is good?” as a way to ask a question that would then be debated back and forth and often exaggerated purposefully to draw contrasts and make points. The result of that is now widely available on the internet.

They seem to had missed a question mark there or at least that what we understood.

I love CCP, but what they've been doing lately, especially after that newsletter, they really need a wake-up call. Hopefully this is it, if not, I really don't know what else there is for the players to do to try and save the game they love and make CCP hear the shouting.

I was awe struck during my protest in Jita 4-4, such energy and fierce determination against non-vanity MT, funny how CCP seems to want to divert that to high prices as the cause.

Completely unrelated….We don't have a class system, and CCP doesn't plan to implement one ever. So nothing to be learned/gained from that reference.

      1. Peaeyedowl

Incorrect, the class system was the tool, but the real cause was the arrogance of SOE, they implemented a new system into the game that was despised by the players, and said it sucks to be you, the players complained and protested, and SOE said just shut up and pay the subscription.

You guys really want to protest? Jam the max number of pilots into jita and have them all log off… then fill it up again and log off… rinse and repeat.

Keeping your accounts online and running doesn't mean anything to CCP. Show them your willing to not play the game and risk their income, that is what will get some attention.

  23. here is the crux of the situation,.. We don't want any MT's, we especially don't want any introduction of Pay-to-win Items or scenarios.

we here at eve are by and large between 25-45 years old and we enjoy a game that offers everyone the same chance at success and failure. We do not want to suddenly see a situation where any 14 year old with access to his daddy's pocket book can buy items that will allow him to win the game.

Hey CCP, this is not just a Game, it's a way of life, it's discipline, it's adventure,.. it's a way for us to come home from our jobs and unwind. Don't take that away from us. Look around, you can see what kind of a mess you have made,.. or are you too blind and important to realize that your customer base is ready to leave and you will have to replace us with the same revolving door policy that other MMO's have?

Common belief is that the last living things after nuclear war will be the cockroaches (actually, they are not so exceptional).
